This museum in Barnaul, one of the oldest such institutions in Russia, was founded in 1823 as the Mining Museum of the Departmental Office of His Imperial Highness. The founders were P. K. Frolov, the head of the Altai Mining District and a collector of antiquities (in 1817, he also transmitted a collection of rare books to the National Library of Russia) and F. B. Gebler, a doctor of medicine, naturalist, and Altai scholar. In the nineteenth century, several famous scientists and travelers visited the museum and became familiar with its collections, including Alexander von Humboldt, Karl Friedrich Ledebour, Alfred Brehm, and others. The museum preserves a unique record of the history of mining in Russia. A historical and architectural monument from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, the building previously served as the main chemical laboratory of the region, instrument store, and part of the municipal hospital.

Один из старейших музеев России. Основан в 1823 г. как Горный Музей Ведомства Кабинета Его Императорского Величества. Основатели: П. К.Фролов - начальник Алтайского горного округа, собиратель древностей (в 1817 г. передал также собрание редких книг в Российскую национальную библиотеку); Ф. В. Геблер - доктор медицины, натуралист, исследователь Алтая, чьим именем назван ледник на высочайшей точке Алтая - горе Белуха. В XIX веке с коллекциями музея знакомились известные ученые, путешественники: А. Гумбольдт, К. Ледебур, А. Брем и другие. Музей - уникальный памятник истории горного дела России. Здания музея находятся в памятниках истории и архитектуры середины XIX - начала XX вв. Ранее - это главная химическая лаборатория округа, инструментальный магазин, корпус городской больницы.
