The “Open Society” Institute (Soros Fund) is one of the largest private philanthropic organizations active in Russia.

The fund’s founder, George Soros, is an American billionaire and a well-known philanthropist and high-profile social figure. There is currently a network of funds and institutions established by George Soros in more than thirty countries, with the goal of creating the necessary framework for the development of an open society, especially in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

The Soros Fund has been active in Russia since 1987. More than $650 million have been spent there in the succeeding years on charitable activity. Part of the program of the “Open Society” Institute (OSI)-Russia has been carried out jointly with the “Open Society” Institute-New York and the “Open Society” Institute-Budapest. These include international (network) programs of the Central European University, “East-East,” “Women’s Network Program,” and a number of others. Apart from this, the Institute has devised and implemented national programs in the areas of education, culture, health care, telecommunications, and the establishment and development of a civil society and human rights. Tens of thousands of scholars and teachers, students, and professors, as well as thousands of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), libraries, museums, universities, and schools, have received grants from the Soros Fund.

In Siberia, the “Open Society” Institute is one of the largest philanthropic funds supporting culture, education, medicine, civil society, and the third sector.

The “Open Society” Institute annually finances dozens of projects in Siberia in the realms of culture, civil society, telecommunications, education, rights, etc. Among our grant recipients are theaters, museums, libraries, social organizations, universities, schools, and clinics in Novosibirsk and other Siberian cities. In practice, OSI—whose partners and grant recipients in Siberia are organizations and people—comprises the sole charitable fund working in the most remote and inaccessible population centers.

Институт "Открытое общество" (Фонд Сороса) – самый большой частный благотворительный фонд, действующий в России.

Основатель фонда – Джордж Сорос, американский миллионер, известный филантроп и видный общественный деятель. В настоящее время более чем в 30 странах действует сеть фондов, учрежденных Джорджем Соросом с целью создания необходимых условий для развития открытого общества, особенно в странах Центральной и Восточной Европы.

В России Фонд Сороса работает с 1987 года. За это время на благотворительную деятельность было израсходовано более 650 миллионов долларов. Часть программ Институт "Открытое Общество"-Россия ведет совместно с Институтом "Открытое Общество"-Нью-Йорк и Институтом "Открытое Общество"-Будапешт. Это международные (сетевые) программы Центрально-Европейского Университета, "Восток-Восток", "Женская сетевая программа" и ряд других. Помимо этого Институт разрабатывает и осуществляет национальные программы в области образования, культуры, здравоохранения, становления и развития гражданского общества и правового государства, телекоммуникаций. Десятки тысяч ученых и учителей, студентов и профессоров, тысячи неправительственных общественных организаций, библиотек, музеев, университетов и школ получили гранты Фонда Сороса.

Ежегодно Институт "Открытое общество" финансирует в Сибири десятки проектов в сфере культуры, гражданского общества, телекоммуникаций, образования, права и т.д. Среди наших грантополучателей – театры, музеи, библиотеки, общественные организации, университеты, школы, клиники Новосибирска и городов Сибири. В реальной практике ИОО является единственным благотворительным фондом, чьими партнерами и грантополучателями в Сибири являются организации и физические лица, работающие в самых отдаленных и труднодоступных населенных пунктах.
