Acknowledgments

Ray Murray, Digital Conversion Specialist, served as the project leader for production of the online collection The Stars and Stripes: The American Soldiers' Newspaper of World War I, 1918-1919. Newspaper subject specialists Mark Sweeney and Georgia Higley of the Serial and Government Publications Division provided guidance about the content and significance of the project and wrote the Special Presentation, "A Closer Look at The Stars and Stripes." The production team is grateful for administrative support provided by Deborah Thomas of the Digital Conversion Group, Martha Anderson of the Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI), and Karen Renninger, Chief of the Serial and Government Publications Division.

Many staff members made significant contributions to the project throughout its planning and production. Elizabeth Madden and Christa Maher (OSI) assisted in developing a data design to meet the unique challenges inherent in this project. In Information Technology Services, David Woodward and Timothy Harker provided programming for the newspaper search-and-display functions and incorporated them into the existing American Memory structure, working from a user-centered design by Michelle Rago (OSI).

Colleen Cahill of the Geography and Map Division assisted in the digital conversion of newspaper page images, as well as in digitizing, processing, and cataloging the map image. Rodney Katz of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division contributed his subject expertise in military history. Pamela Roper Wagner and Jurretta Jordan Heckscher (Digital Reference Team) edited the collection's framework materials. Qun Lai, working with Andrea Dillon and Vicki Fortuno (OSI), designed the Web pages. Attorneys Emily Vartanian and Ami Gandhi from the Office of General Counsel advised the team regarding matters of copyright.

The OCLC Digital and Preservation Resources of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, scanned the pages of The Stars and Stripes for the online collection.
