In January 2003, the project to create subdivision authority records to control the approximately 3,250 topical, form, and chronological free-floating subdivisions in the Library of Congress Subject Headings system was completed. These records contain subdivision data in 18X fields and codes in 073 fields that identify their controlling instruction sheet numbers from the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings (H 1095 - H 1200). All records contain a basic usage statement and some records contain references that may be enhanced in the future. New records will be created and existing records will be revised as changes are made to subdivisions in the normal subject heading editorial process. Below are sample subdivision records:
Topical subdivisions

Chronological subdivisions

Geographic subdivisions
Note: The Library of Congress will not routinely create subdivision records for geographic headings. Instead the subdivision forms of geographic names are recorded in 781 linking fields added to subject authority records for geographic headings (151), and in the future, to name authority records for geographic headings. Below is one of the few geographic subdivision records that the Library of Congress will create.

LC creates two records for subdivisions that can function as either topical or form subdivisions:

Subdivision records that include topical and form elements are tagged for the function that the subdivision in the first subfield performs. Additional subfields are coded for their function.
