The Economist now available on BARD

The An audio edition of the Economist, a weekly newsmagazine that has been covering international affairs, politics, business, finance, science, and technology for nearly 170 years, is now available on the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD). It is recorded by professional broadcasters in London, England, and includes the full contents of the print edition.

The addition of the Economist to BARD is part of a trial project to increase the availability of magazines to NLS patrons. For now the Economist is available only on BARD, but it will be offered on digital cartridge when the magazine program transitions to that format in the not-too-distant future.

The Economist was first published in London in 1843. But today four-fifths of its more than 1.4 million subscribers are outside Great Britain, according to the magazine's website. "We try to tell the world about the world, to persuade the expert and reach the amateur, with an injection of opinion and argument," a recent editor said.

Michael Katzmann, chief of the NLS Materials Development Division, said, "We approached the Economist and asked if we could make the audio edition available to our readers, and the publisher was happy to agree. It's a perfect fit—it gets to our patrons faster, is in keeping with our cover-to-cover philosophy, and it's equal in quality to what patrons would get from NLS narrators."

BARD is an online service that NLS operates in partnership with cooperating libraries to give patrons faster access to digital talking books and magazines. It includes thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles and a wide selection of magazines. To learn more about BARD, go to https://nlsbard.loc.gov and select BARD Application Instructions.
