About Talking Book Topics

Talking Book Topics is published bimonthly in audio, large-print, and online formats and distributed at no cost to blind and physically handicapped individuals who participate in the Library of Congress reading program. It lists digital audiobooks and magazines available through a network of cooperating libraries and covers news of developments and activities in network library services.

The annotated list in this issue is limited to titles recently added to the national collection, which contains thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles, including bestsellers, classics, biographies, romance novels, mysteries, and how-to guides. Some books in Spanish are also available. To explore the wide range of books in the national collection, access the NLS International Union Catalog online at loc.gov/nls or contact your local cooperating library.

NFB-NEWSLINE accessible through new iOS app

Accessible museum tours in New York City

The Whitney Museum of American Art and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), both in New York City, offer accessible tours that incorporate both verbal description and the opportunity to touch objects in the museums’ collections.

The Whitney’s free tours last ninety minutes and are held monthly or by request. To obtain more information e-mail accessfeedback@whitney.org or call (212) 570-7789.

Science Sense tours at the AMNH are free with museum admission and take place approximately once per month. Upcoming tour topics include Mexico and Central America, on October 18; vertebrate origins, on November 11; and primitive and advanced mammals, on December 12. Advance registration is required. Audio Bibles available in nineteen languages

Aurora Ministries has expanded its digital talking-book cartridge offerings to include Bibles in nineteen languages, including Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin. Patrons interested in receiving a free Bible may send a blank cartridge to Audio Bibles for the Blind, PO Box 621, Bradenton, FL 34206. For a $15 donation, Aurora Ministries will supply the cartridge. Television networks to provide described programming

Several television networks, including ABC, CBS, Fox, and TNT, have each added approximately four hours a week of described video programming. These accessible offerings are required under the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA). Books listed in this issue of Talking Book Topics were recently sent to cooperating libraries. The complete collection contains a wide range of fiction and nonfiction books, including biographies, classics, westerns, mysteries, romances, and others. Contact your cooperating library to learn more about the wide range of books available in the collection.

Digital talking books, available on cartridges, are labeled with the prefix DB. Most books fit on one cartridge. Cassette books are labeled with the prefix RC and play at 15/16 ips. One cassette holds up to six hours of play. To order books, contact your cooperating library. Many books are also available for download on the NLS BARD web site at http://nlsbard.loc.gov/.

Note: For the information of the reader, a notice may appear immediately following the book description to indicate occurrences of violence, strong language, or explicit descriptions of sex.
