The Road to Leadership

Leaders are found in our classrooms, athletic competitions, corporations, and legislatures.  These individuals, as Steven Pearlstein wrote in, "Seven who exceed defining," have "determination not just to do their jobs well, but to redefine them to make them broader and the challenges more ambitious."  Of course, some leaders — George Washington is a prime example — define the role for others to follow.

NIE Curriculum Guides

U. S. HISTORY | During The Civil War Napoleonic strategies, bayonets and lances were used. At the same time, inventions and innovations ushered in the industrial-age and modern warfare. In this guide that accompanies The Post’s fourth Civil War 150 special supplement, lesson suggestions, resources and Post articles focus on Spring to Fall 1862, daily life and the impact of changing technology on battle.

Providing future generations with places that reflect their cultural values and ideals and maintaining their political, social and historic legacy requires a commitment of individuals, organizations and government. Many of the activities in this guide cross disciplines because of the social, cultural, economic and historic issues, art and architecture considerations, and science of preservation.

Third parties, interest groups and political movements add to the debate of issues, influence policy decisions and reflect the attitudes of citizens. This guide provides activities to examine their role and the impact of the Tea Party movement, interest group funding and the media itself on the 2010 campaigns and elections. Suggested activities incorporate Post news coverage, commentaries, editorial cartoons and graphics. Students are also guided to create a third party.
