Irish-born Tammany Hall boss Richard Eyre Croker (1843-1922) was 71 in 1914, when he married Beulah Benton (or Benson) Edmonson (or Edmondson) (1884-1957), who was 1/16 Cherokee and an alumna of the Cherokee National Female Seminary, shortly after his first wife's passing. He left his fortune to this second wife, and not to his children; Croker's children tried to claim that the Croker-Edmonson marriage wasn't valid, but they were unsuccessful in proving their claims. The will was still being contested as late as 1937.
