Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement

business meetingThe Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement (IAPE) leads USTR's public outreach efforts to state and local governments, both small and large business and agricultural communities, and labor, environmental and consumer groups.

USTR is at the forefront of the Administration's efforts to create jobs in the United States by doing trade in a new way. IAPE supports this vital mission by working closely with stakeholders and the general public to get trade right; by talking and listening to more Americans to implement U.S. trade policy that seeks agreements full of export opportunities around the world and good jobs here at home.

As the greeters for USTR, IAPE welcomes all Americans to share how their businesses are affected by trade and to share the increased benefits provided to local economies, small businesses and consumers through trade.

IAPE proactively engages with the community at-large through continuous outreach efforts that include meetings at the USTR offices and conversations with groups and individuals across the country.

IAPE also oversees the U.S. Trade Advisory Committee system. The U.S Trade Advisory Committees are an integral part of the trade negotiating process, providing advice and guidance in the construction of trade relations with nations around the world.

Lastly, harnessing new technologies and practices, IAPE has a strong on-line presence which includes a weekly newsletter, and other interactive elements that provide tools for citizens to actively engage with USTR. Through public events as well as activities on the web site USTR strives to build a strong and beneficial partnership with the public.
