    "content": "<h2>About the Spanish Civil War Posters</h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The collection of Spanish Civil War posters in the\r\nLibrary of Congress Prints and Photographs Division\r\nconsists of approximately 120 posters created between 1936\r\nand 1939.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>In July of 1936, Francisco Franco led a military coup\r\nwith the goal of overthrowing the democratically elected\r\ngovernment of the Spanish Republic, marking the beginning\r\nof the Spanish Civil War. The violent conflict sparked the\r\ncreation of posters by both the victorious Nationalists and\r\nthe Republicans. Most posters in the collection support the\r\nRepublican cause, but the Nationalists are also\r\nrepresented, and the posters feature the perspectives of\r\nthe trade unions, Catalonian nationalists, and various\r\ninternational groups. The posters warned of the evils of\r\ncommunism and fascism and called citizens to action for a\r\nvariety of causes such as food production and conservation.\r\n(For a list of subjects represented, see the <a href=\r\n\"./index/subjects/\">Subject Index</a>.) Acquired by the\r\nLibrary of Congress from various sources, these posters\r\ngive voice to the many conflicting agendas that contributed\r\nto the chaos in Spain during the Civil War.</p>\r\n",
