Great picture, consider it was taken more than 100 years ago. Still vivid and sharp.

    absolutely breathtaking

Been to Montana, the winds can chill even in August. Looks like he's wearing a sheepskin jacket, which they always tanned themselves.

    This is an amazing picture.

@dewi silvana, it was taken in 1942. Long time back, but not so far as 100 years ;-)

What a great image, so much detail.

the horse looking confident, the dog looking to the man for guidance, the man looking emotionally lost if not geographically. beautiful.

This is worthy of framing or re-printing. I could see this in a rustic hotel or cabin somewhere. Its unusual and you can see his weathered face along with his trusted dog waiting on his next instruction.

I love it. (and, Monkey, good touch-up.)

I don't think it'd work as hotel art. The horse is too imposing (excellent contrast!), making the photo command more attention than a passing glance.

Three superb portraits and what a 'habitat'

This brings back ideas for the fuel crisis. Since our government lacks the guts to reduce speed limits and thus reduce the amount of gasoline burned daily, maybe we should sell a car and ride a horse. No need for mechanics, oil changes, windshield wipers, green on the environment, and slow enough that you notice life instead of passing it by!

Stuffed dog, stuffed horse... not so sure about the man... tourist at best! Photo actually taken in 1997 at the Mall of America... his NAME might have been Shepherd...

Captured expression on all faces, especially the dog's, and dramatic lighting where you can see detail in shadows, Taken in 1942!!! Obviously this photographer had No Need for Photoshop!

shame there has to be negative to all.. I've been there[raised in mont.]
and I've done that... if its
PM-horse is tired// dog is, in fact, watching for intruction [whistle or hand motion] ,herder is looking over a hundred or so miles of land to
decide where to take herd for best feeding, being sure no predators are around/andlooking for water..it is a natural picture [I hate photo shop,etc].. did my own share of herding in 1944/45/46 in mont...
posssibly basque but my dad [german] looked about like that... joe
