Get more into what you love on YouTube with our new look

From your favorite sports highlights and dance competitions to make-up tutorials, science experiments and great movies, there’s a ton of great stuff on YouTube — over three billion views worth per day by last count. More and more, behind every great video is a great Channel, and with our announcement last month that more of them are coming to YouTube, we want to make it easier for you to find and keep tabs of what you want to watch.

So, today we're introducing a new homepage, Channel design and a fresh coat of digital paint. Here are three ways these updates will improve your life on YouTube:

1. A new homepage
The YouTube homepage is your gateway to a vast entertainment universe. To help you get more into YouTube, we’re making it easier to find and follow great Channels when you arrive. On the left side of the homepage you can create your own, personal, customizable YouTube Channel line-up. Sign-in, or create a YouTube account. Then you can browse recommended Channels; customize your homepage’s feed; even link your YouTube account to Google+ and Facebook to see what your friends are sharing. The new homepage feed we launched earlier this year is now front and center on the homepage. You can switch between feeds by clicking on different Channels on the left.

For step by step instructions on using the new YouTube homepage, you can go to our help center.

2. Simpler, customizable Channels
Given the homepage’s new focus on helping you find and organize your favorite Channels, we would be remiss if we didn’t update the look and feel of the Channels themselves. Today we're launching an improved Channel design focused on what matters most: helping users find great videos. As different uploaders have different goals, we've created new Channel templates to meet your needs whether you produce one video a week or have thousands of videos for a fan to browse. Some partners have even uploaded videos talking about the features, or giving tips on how they’re taking advantage of the new design. To learn how to opt-in to and test this new Channel design, check out our help center.

3. A new overall design
To bring the new homepage and Channels designs together we’ve also applied a fresh coat of digital paint across the whole site. In July, we unveiled an experimental design called Cosmic Panda. We’ve used your feedback to improve our overall design, and today, we’re presenting a cleaner and simpler YouTube, with a consistent gray background, bigger video thumbnails and a more streamlined watch page.

Ready to get started? Your new YouTube is already shipped and waiting for you at YouTube.com, and like every new toy, we included an instruction manual (and video) to help.

Our recent Channels expansion, our grants and educational programs, and this new design are all focused on helping you discover a broader range of entertainment on YouTube. We’re always innovating and testing new stuff out to make the experience the best it can be for you. We rely on your feedback to figure out when we've gotten it right and when it needs further tweaks. So let us know what you think.

The YouTube team

Why did you show it differently in the video than it actually is? IT DOES NOT have those types of backgrounds. VERY MISLEADING VIDEO. This turns people off who are not currently using it. The design IS NOTHING like in this video. Why only show the "true" new look ONLY at the end of the video?

HappyCabbie said...

Sorry but this is not good. When I want to see my subscriptions I want the most recent videos up at the top. I don't want to have to click through all 300 of my subscriptions to see if they added anything new.

This is a sad day. It will only hurt view counts.

I still have the same page.

With all due respect to the extensive market research you have likely put into this release, isn't the main appeal of YouTube discovering content from people without million dollar ad budgets? I'm not sure how categories full of recommendations from CBS/NBC/Apple/CNET etc. keep that culture alive.

I actually like the new design as it pertains to the design itself but it seems like the people that YouTube gave a voice too are now getting shoved to the backseat in favor of content that looks good on television. That's not revolutionizing television, that's simply copying what's already there.

There are also glaring omissions from the categories list like 'Travel' which is one of the largest industries in the world just to name one.

I hope this is as good as you say but to say I have doubts would be a true understatement with my first impressions.

Make it so the most recent video in the playlist is featured.

how do i CHANGE the layout back to the OLD one. i can't stand this. it's ugly and disorganized and everything's all over the place. this is just going downhill.

AdamT. said...

Quit changing the look. Just pick one and stick with it.

I want the old style back.. this is so disorganized and instead of seeing EVERY SINGLE recent video seperately, I'd like to group my subscriptions together - how it was before. This is just... distracting :(

Love the new design!

Some nitpicks:
* The site OpenSearch still has the old favicon.
* Embedded players are still inconsistent: some let me go fullscreen, add to Playlists, & have YouTube icon in control bar; others don't have those features & have old style of YouTube overlay.

Listing here again, because it needs repeating - and more importantly -- needs fixing:

-- Channel Pages --
PROS:
+ Thumbnails are big - the "blogger layout" seems conducive to grabbing views on older content.
+ The header bar with videos/subs/view counts is nice and clear.
+ Showing channel title instead of username is nice.
+ The banner exists (it didn't in Cosmic Panda)

CONS:
- No Side-banner image
- No listing of "Shows"
- No option to feature the most recent upload
- About Me section limited to a pathetic 200 characters? ... AND hidden below the fold.
- Branding Box been reduced to a useless tower of links on the side? I want to include show schedules and descriptions - not a bunch of links without context.
- No opacity options for modules
- Personal account avatar (top right corner) needlessly cropped? I just don't understand the point.

As for the homepage, I echo GenesisTwilight's thoughts completely.

The new insight is something I've had in CMS for a year now, and I love it... *but* it's much harder now to see total views/graph on a video's lifetime. Insight had a very quick option when you clicked "Max" for the time frame, which made it very easy to jump back, and check views for the video's first week posted. Within Analytics... you have to input this date manually, from memory.

I am not inclined to "upgrade" when so much functionality is dropped for no reason. Please address these concerns -- I speak for the community.

Awful as usual. I want the option to change back but, because you have no intention of doing so, I want COMPLETE CUSTOMIZATION options, so I can get rid of your recommendations and the left sidebar. Don't you already get the hint that nobody uses it in Google? Most importantly, I don't want ANY of your planned new channel designs. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE USERS TO BE FORCED TO CHANGE. Allow us the option of retaining our current design. It's not going to hurt you to do so. Control your arrogance and LISTEN, for once.

Liam Dryden said...

Why didn't you listen to the feedback when you threw this design onto people without asking? THIS HOMEPAGE IS BAD. REALLY BAD. It limits what you can see from your subscriptions and jeopardises the view counts of content creators everywhere, catering mostly for new users which - News flash - HARDLY EXIST because VIRTUALLY EVERYONE USES YOUTUBE. Ugh you're already working on Cosmic Panda you don't need this unnecessary ugly middle child of a change

New subscription is retarded. takes 30min what needed one with the old layout. NoobTube

Guest_1001 said...

Absolutely awful. What is it with developers of sites owned by big corporations that think they need to revamp their design every six months or so?

The old site was simple and streamlined. The new one is, as xstrawberry said, ugly to look at and disorganised. I now have to do a ridiculous amount of scrolling to view all the videos in my subscriptions box and can't keep track of which ones I've viewed and which I haven't.

Very, very stupid thing to do, overhauling the site and making everyone have to navigate their way around something they're unfamiliar with. But it's not like YouTube cares, right? The makers of a site that should be about user content really don't give a damn about what we want. They've been working on this redesign for a long time now and they're not going to see their hard work go to waste, no matter how many people dislike it.

Jared Harder said...

Don't feel bad YouTube team! I really like the changes. Sure, there's probably things that you can improve on (see the post from Jonny Paula for instance), but on the whole it's an improvement.

For me, I've been a user of YouTube for years now, and before this change I never took part in the community. I watched videos, very seldom "Liked" anything (7 videos total at last count after years of use), and commented twice. Since the homepage change, I've subscribed to several channels for the first time and I'm actually using YouTube socially.

As for the rest of you who are hating on the changes, go whine in your Facebook where they change the design every 2 months and you cry about it for a week, then promptly forget everything you ever said about the horrible design changes. Change happens, YouTube is no different from any other major website.

Helmi said...

As far as the overall look of the channel pages goes, this is the first big change I think is a real improvement. It no longer looks like a MySpace junk heap.

Small glitch: I can't seem to edit my "about" blurb or even change the links, because it thinks I have more than 200 characters even if I delete the whole field. Tried on different browsers - can only change if I click "edit channel", and then there's no options for the links.

mariwashere said...

Awful. Can't you give us the option to revert back?

SuperFloree said...

I don't mind you changing stuff up, but it does get kinda annoying (i just contradicted myself there XD). I liked it better the way it was before, with all my subs grouped together. I was more organised for me. Also, I can't find the video response button ANYWHERE. Help please?

TheGZeus said...

I can't see any change.
Fairly silly to claim it's released and ready when your instruction manual doesn't even exist, and the layout isn't available to all users.
You _keep doing this_ for every change, and it's utterly stupid.

"We rely on your feedback to figure out when we've gotten it right and when it needs further tweaks. So let us know what you think"

Why you say this when you obiously don't listen to us users. You try to make it look as if we really could affect on changes when we don't. You just don't care what we want. Eventually this will only do harm to you.

melispanda said...

Youtube, stop with all the layout changes! The last one was perfectly fine and easy. Everything was on ONE PAGE! It was easy to navigate, I could see if I had a PM on the homepage, and I could delete videos from my subscription tabs after I've watched them. Now all of that is gone, and what took it over is the most confusing layout I've ever seen. These updates aren't necessary and only make people mad. If you just have to update, make it an option. Don't force all of Youtube to make a change they don't want to. Plus, the new channel layout it terrible. They pictures are way to big, the comments are hidden, and you can't change the transparency to see the background better. Overall, my opinion on the new layout, it's the worst update from you guys ever. 1/10. Please change it back. Or at least give us an option to choose between the two. Please?

Any change that helps with discovery is welcomed.

Blah Man said...

I, for one, love the video pages. The homepage, not so much. One of the old design principles said this:

Don't miss anything; if a channel uploads four videos in a day, you’ll see all four - instead of just the latest video

While, sure, I'll see all four videos, they're spread out so far in between that I can't really even see them. Another feature that I enjoyed is also missing:

Remove any video (hover and click the "x" button)

I would improve this homepage by putting back these features, at least adding the option to sort videos in the feed by uploader (like the old one, grouped together), and overall just widening it up. I haven't seen the homepage on a resolution wider than my own (1366x768), but it looks like it's limited to only the middle 900 or so. Give us the ability to remove modules (reccomendations, suggested channels, etc.).

Honestly, I would test these waters like how Google tested G-Mail; a "Try the new look" button with an option to go back. You had Black Panda, but I didn't even see that option until this was released.

Hope this feedback helped.

I'm sorry, but this is just ridiculous. Youtube looked perfectly fine before. The new channel page is horrendous, but when it comes to the homepage? No, just no.

Normally when you log onto youtube it's easy to see what your subscriptions have uploaded at a glance. To say the least, the new design is complicated, ugly and confusing.

I'd say go back to the old design, it was insanely simple to use and looked a lot better.

Kathleen L.D. said...

The new layout is terrible, switch it back! You've made it incredibly hard to check subscriptions and the design as a whole seems to be more focused on "Oooh look how pretty we are!" rather than usability.

And as for the new channel pages... no. Just no.

Dave said...

The design in general is ok, but so so bad. When I go to my own youtube user page, I get my favorite playlist on the side and a nice big space in the middle to watch those videos, why, because those are my favorites. Now, it's impossible to find what I want and when I do, I get taken to the users page to view it rather than me just staying on my page to view it and then view something else quickly when that video is done.

Unknown said...

I've gotta say: I'm loving the new changes.

First of all: For everyone that's complaining about not being able to see all of your subscriptions: Go to any page, click the top-right corner where your name is to open the drop-down menu and click "Subscriptions" All of your subs are STILL there allowing you to see all of the videos that everyone uploaded.
Considering how many people hated the old homepage, most people (that I know of, at least) used this method as the only method to check up on their subscribers newly posted videos and this feature has not been removed nor has it been changed.

The new subscriber change on the front page that you guys are talking about is a new feature for those that find themselves subscribed to 100's of people and want for their top 10 favorites to show up on the homepage. It's not a feature removal since the ability to see all of your subscribers can still be accessed the normal way.

The main channel page for each user (and the examples given in the other blog post) look ok, however, I see that they've gone for a bit more "Style over substance" due to their new tools.
One of the biggest advantages of the old channel page, regardless of how it looked, was that all of the information was streamlined and made easy to access. It had a few flaws of its own in terms of streamlining but this new channel page feels like a step backwards.
I liked being able to watch a video on someone's channel page while flipping through their older videos on the right (AT THE SAME TIME)

2nd big gripe: Channel Page comments. In order to be able to see ones channel comments, instead of just looking down at the bottom of the page, you have to click away from what you're watching on their channel page by clicking the feed tab and THEN click "View comments only"
This is backwards. You went from streamlined easy access to jumping through 2 options just to see channel comments AND making it so that you can't do or look at anything else while doing so. How is that an improvement? Again, streamlined content and visual should always take precedence over new design changes. This just added new hoops and unnecessary limitations compared to what you had before. I don't see any benefit for making that change considering that it's the ONLY WAY to view channel comments on a person's page (Example: FinalCutKing's Youtube page. When you do make it to the comments, you see comments of users asking "where's the comments?" "Where did all the comments go?") I bring them up since you posted them as one of your example pages utilizing the new format. Those complaints are only going to multiply unless you guys change this to work in a more streamlined manner...and fast.

Most of everything else is a vast improvement compared to some of the more dismal and backwards improvements that have come out over the past 2 years. All that you need to do is fix some of these streamlining issues to make this design even better.

Seriously Google? I thought you asked for feedback on this when it was a Beta and it was near universally despised! This is a hindrance to the experience. Instead of fixing bugs, you just have your coders work on yet another new layout.

The old one was not perfect, but it worked a lot better than this one. Give users a choice if you want a new layout instead of forcing it on them.

Doesn't work on ps3- the subscriptions box all bunches up and then completely disappears.
(And no, I'm not going to touch goddamn Youtube XL)
I use my ps3 for most of my internet surfing, as it requires less effort than to get up and use my desktop computer, and it's relatively easy.
Since blip.tv's overhaul, I was unable to watch a large portion of internet videos.
This new Youtube look has just gone and cut EVERYTHING down, making surfing the web on PS3 practically useless. Fantastic.

Also, what on earth is up with this grey thing. It's a horrible, beigey disgusting shade of grey, and is a real shock to the eyes when coming from plain white sites like, oh, the rest of the internet. Especially Google.
Most people, I assume, have Google as a homepage? going from the clean white of that to the dirty underpants grey of this new Youtube is horrible.

Honestly, what I think you should do is keep this design, no matter how bad it is, but make a 'simple' version of Youtube- plain, minimal everything and entirely in java sort of thing so that EVERYONE can use it, regardless of what they're using it on.
Hell, even if it took a ReCaptcha to watch a video, at least I'd be ABLE to watch videos, no?

ALSO- where are you testing this stuff on the public? Could you not, say, develop this stuff behind our back and then throw it in our faces, and instead slowly introduce us to it while we gently guide you into perfect layout heaven? How about you give us brightly coloured little banners that say "Hey come check new Youtube out -if you do or don't like it, tell us why! Then we'll see what we can do, and then release that one as a beta, until we achieve zen."
That would be nice.

The new homepage is a complete crap. It's very disorganized and makes me go through every single channel in a quest to find if my subscritpions have a single new piece of content. The sugestions on the left side are completely out of place, it occupies to much space from the page for it to be useful. How the hell do you expect me to search for new content, when you just shove every piece of content I don't want to see right to my face instead of the videos I came here for, other wise knowned as: my subscription box!

Youtube, keep yourself together, put the old homepage back and stop trying to fix things that aren't broken instead of leaving the same old bugs without any resolution. It almost passes the image that you don't care...Hell! I don't even know if you really do...

I actually like the new homepage design, the smooth graphics makes it much cooler in my opinion. Also, the tab idea is pretty neat as well, although I do agree with a few points.

Homepage
1.) Changing the view of the center column, allowing both the Listed version we currently have, and the Grid system we used to have with the option to seperate between channels or put it all in order just based on time.
2.) Can we have some control over the "Recommended" section somehow?

Now channels, I'm not really a fan of it because we lose a lot of features from the original despite the cleaner look.

3.) The new limit on Description/About Us. My current description hits near 1500 characters. I'm pretty sure text isn't a large file to store or anything, can't it be raised to 2500 each or something? Maybe a line limit instead if that's possible.
4.) Changing theme/color
5.) Removing the more/less on description, or the ability to cancel it.
6.) Again, allowing a grid system. More customization than just the four templates given.
7.) Allow design editing like the video shown in the blog.
8.) Where did the modules go? Like polls or whatever.

It's great for new design, not so great when backtracking by removing features.

I'm subscribed to over 500 channels...this new layout makes it impossible to easily keep up with everyone's content. Two updates ago it wasn't a problem to get what I wanted out of the front page.

At least I can still go to the subscription page until that gets redesigned or removed all together, right?

Unknown said...

Ahhh... Another year, another unnecessary redesign. At least this one doesn't look like total ass, though.

Pathosis said...

There doesn't appear to be an option to remove a subbed video on the front page. Even after watching it in it's entirety, will still remain on front page. Previously, there was the option remove the video, but it doesn't appear to be available anymore.

This can be problematic for accounts with large subscription numbers, as the videos will trail down the page for seemingly miles.

This issue is magnified even more due to there being one video per line. The previous layout remedied this by having subscribed videos from a user nicely stacked across and minimized. Allowing for a more tidy and clean look. Sadly, this feature is nowhere where to be seen.

jsfly said...

Unknown probably works for youtube.... No one in their right minds would actually enjoy this new updated look.

Blah Man said...

To also add something on, with your comment on the previous homepage:

It’s simpler, more personal, and it makes it easier to follow and watch the videos that are meaningful to you.

Honestly, none of these are present in the current homepage. 3 columns is not simpler compared to one. More personal? I can't even delete videos that I've watched that should be "greyed out". With another column in the right dedicated to videos YouTube thinks _might_ be interesting to you.

Please, YouTube, give us the choice to go back.

New issue: How in the wide world of 5-Star ratings does one go about doing a video response? I don't see any options to do so...ANYWHERE. I just seriously spent a good 5-10 minutes in JUST trying to figure out how to do a video response. Really Youtube? Did you guys spend so much time on the redesign that somebody FORGOT TO PUT IN THE FEATURE TO MAKE VIDEO RESPONSES?!? *facepalm*

To those that are still blind enough to not see their new subscription list on the homepage: Just click the word subscriptions at the top on the left OR click your name on the top-right and, in the drop down box, click Subscriptions.
Honestly, I said it before and I'll say it again, it's not gone. It's actually quite organized based on who posts what and when. There's even a button on the right side near the top to make it so that you only see the uploads. If you've clicked the subscribers button the left, you see all of your subscribers stuff and not just the top 10. USE YOUR EYES, PEOPLE.

This is going to make channels lose subscribers. The (x) button is gone on the homepage for videos you don't want to watch. I am subscribed to channels that I only watch some of their videos and now they're going to fill up my homepage if I don't watch them so now I am going to have to unsubscribe.

The (x) button is a form of control we need as viewers.

pokematic said...

Ok, I like the fact that videos are in my sub in order of uploading. That was something I didn't like about the last update. What I don't get is
WHY CAN'T I REMOVE WATCHED VIDEOS???????!!!!!!! Realy? I have tons of subs, and like most Americans, I'm lazy and and don't want to back track through all my old views. I'd hate to miss a video because I don't see it because my subs are so overflowed.

And to the channel page, why limit the description legth and about me legth? I have a lot to say, and so do many people. We can't tell all about ourselves and our content if we're limited. And all the links in my channel description aren't hyperlinks. Undo the character limit for decriptions, and alow me to remove watched videos from my home page, and I'll be happy. I saw that there was a thing about adding links, to which I have no opinion on, because I have more than 1000 characters in my channel description.

I don't care about the other things, just the character limit and no removal of watched videos. You don't need to worry about atracting new viewers. You're google youtube, the most popular video website on the internet. The people who know about non-youtube sites are outnumber those who only know youtube by probably 100 to 1. What I'm saying is a majority of the population only know youtube. You have no competition.

So our opinions that are well thought out are bad, but yours regarding it's "good quality" apparently aren't?

Seriously, why should I have to click on anything to see what my subscriptions have for updates? What was so bad about the latest videos being in one convenient section instead of every single one being stretching the scroll bar all the way to the bottom of the page? It's completely silly and a total waste of space.

It's fairly obvious that 90% of the users don't actually like anything you do, just as we get used to one update you force another one into our face and make us accept it without listening to feedback, isn't it obvious that this doesn't "improve your life on YouTube" one bit? All it's doing is making things harder and buggier to use

"We rely on your feedback to figure out when we've gotten it right and when it needs further tweaks. So let us know what you think."

Don't be hypocrites, it'd actually be nice if that whole sentence wasn't a lie

Now I have a long list of videos sorted by posted time.

In order for me to find more videos by the same subscriber I have to scroll all the way down to load more or click on the subscriptions bar on the left (which is sorted by alpha and not by my personal preference) and visit each channel. Additionally I can't remove uploads from the center feed if I don't want to watch it or have done so on another device. How stupid is that?

I much preferred the old format of grouping uploads by subscription.

I'm not on youtube to be social. I'm here to watch videos.

It's overly crowded, there's no breathing space, the cramped front page with the massively annoying profile bar in the middle makes me want to punch myself in the face rather than scroll down and try to pick something out of the line up. It's got new features you say? I don't give two buckets of rain water what I can do with it because I HATE it so much that I'd rather do ANYTHING ELSE online than hang around on it long enough to take advantage of them.

I never thought that I'd beg a company for a downgrade but it's finally happened.

HORRIBLE CHANGE

It looks like you guys are trying to make this into a social network! Before, all the videos uploaded by subscribed-to channels were neatly organized by channel, but now it looks like a shitty facebook wall with all the videos just thrown up there randomly.

If I want to find the recent videos uploaded by just one channel I have to click over to their tab and have it sort to just the recent uploaded videos. This is nowhere near simpler or easier to use.

Also, I dont want to be bombarded with 20 videos and 10 channels that youtube is trying to recommend to me, I know what I like, and I know how to use the search bar, dont give me all this useless crap cluttering up my page. It was fine before with just 3 or 4 recommended videos, but now it takes up almost 1/4th of the page!

0/10 youtube, quit the social networking push and give me back the website I use to enjoy coming to. This is a big step back for you

The new design/look is nice, but the organisation is atrocious. We don't want to see every video uploaded by one subscription separately, we want to see them all together. Then, we want to remove them from the list after they've been viewed. We liked these things, why get rid of them?!

Drac said...

I neither like it nor hate it, but a few things do bother me:

I would like to see all my subscriptions clustered together again, showing the latest 4 or 5 videos they updated, and they are removed once I view them or X them off (which I notice I can't do now, very sad).

Also I would like to be able to remove the suggested channels and the re-blogging stuff, since these are features I never use.

yasmina3333 said...

The homepage, as others have said, is very disorganized. Videos of the same person should be together. Once you watch the videos, they are still on that list, so I have scroll down to get to the other videos. The fact that the old ones are always at the bottom, makes it difficult for the users who want to watch them in order, and also difficult to find in all that chunck of disorganized videos. You should also be able to delete the videos you don't wanna watch or have already watched.

Basically, instead of making things easier and visually appealing, it's just difficult to navigate and too crowded.

I'd also love to have the option to choose if I want the old layout of the new one. And if that's not possible, a fully customizable homepage is definitely needed.

1) your "preview" is not working (I could wait forever for progress bar) and I had to write this from scratch - not cool. I was trying few times. What's the point of tool for commenting when it's not working?
2) the main problem: the times when everyone had 800x600 passed away and fixed width is a nightmare. I'm privileged having 16:10 but unfortunately modern screens have 16:9 so even more scrolling and even more wasted spaces on sides. You are forcing users to use Greasemonkey scripts to fix your "brilliant" ideas. Pity...

Please give my views back and fix the gaps. My channel is "in good condition" and it has nothing to do with my browser.

How do I change it back to the old style? I want all the new subscriptions grouped together like they were before. I don't want to have to scroll down a long list to see new videos. I also want to delete the videos I've watched or don't intend on watching.

Unknown said...

Do you really think there's something good about providing less content per screen? You know, the more videos we have to choose from, the easier it will be to find one that we would actually watch, and thus more ad revenue for you. (Yeah, we get that it's about money.)

Also, the videos that are most relevant to me are the recommended videos, which you, once again, reduced in number. And, surprise, surprise, the ones that stick around are the oens I don't want. Come on! We went through this already last time you changed stuff.

And that's not even covering how many people are pissed because they can't delete videos, so if they signed up for a channel with lots of content, they can't filter out what they don't want to watch.

Come on. I know you got tons of feedback of people explaining this to you in the beta.

What has changed in Google that you guys are so gungho about changing everything, whether it's actually better or not?

FrankTheCat said...

The new layout is a confusing attempt at Web2.0. Just because Tumblr's format is successful, doesn't mean it's going to work on Youtube.

The previous layout let the user see all the videos each of their subscribed channels uploaded in a day, as well as remove ones they had watched, or didn't want to watch, all from their homepage.

The new one scrunches up everything into a 900pixel wide column that increased the amount of scrolling the user has to do ten fold. KISS.

For a Google-owned service, your sudden implementation of a now widely-hated layout is not good form. Gmail has always had an option to keep the previous layout, or try the new one well ahead of time. This is a mistake far too many companies make with their website. Private, internal testing is heavily biased.

I suggest you provide users with an option to use the old layout ASAP, and collect feedback from users on how to repair your new layout to be more usable. Then introduce the option to use that newly-upgraded upgrade, instead of shoving it down everyone's throat.

Signed,
A Nerdfighter.

I think it looks absolutely hideous and cluttered. I think I speak for most people when I say that I preferred the simple, open design of Youtube's front page before it was obsessed with "personalized everything", and just showed whatever was recent or popular. I feel it's much easier and more open for the casual user, without being this huge disorganized mass of text and gray. You should put an emphasis on the videos, not lists and columns of words. Furthermore, the new color scheme is hideous and makes things hard to read.

For heaven's sake, Youtube isn't a social networking site, it's about user-generated video content!

I have closed my Youtube account and completely removed it from my bookmarks and browsing history, and blocked it from my Google search returns. I don't want to have to look at such a revolting website.

Please change it back, or at least give the option to hide all the extra features.

denverthen said...

As 'upgrades' go, this is a total disaster. What a mess. Whoever came up with this has about as much ergonomic design sense as a blind badger.

Just to be clear, anything that makes a social network site harder to use is a *bad* idea. These changes have made YouTube much harder to use, ergo, it's a bad idea.

Don't get me started on the new channel page design. It is truly hopeless. It actually has far fewer functions and is far less user friendly.

I'm beginning to wonder now: is Google trying to kill YouTube?

Rachid AJMAL said...

Great Change!
Thanks Youtube

denverthen said...

Well, I'm still trying to use it and getting nowhere fast. It really is hopeless: clunky, old-fashioned and utterly confusing.

Possibly the worst thing, however - out of many, many playground design mistakes - is the lack of a player on the homepage. I mean, what is the point of a video player with no actual player - the star of the show and the site's USP -on the front page??

You've turned it into just another search engine, a poor relation of Google. You might as well get rid of the website altogether and just have it as another type of Google search category. It's that bad.

Truly terrible. Way to wreck a unique website, Google.

I'll say it again, one could almost imagine it was deliberate.

You going to publish this comment? Or are you into censoring things you don't like as well these days.

Nope it's actually way better. The old page was hardly functional.

DownshiftDX said...

Another vote for changing the layout back. I am sick of sites thinking that I want poorly personalized everything. You know where I discover most new content on YouTube? From what is recommended after a video plays through fully. I don't want sidebars listing utter nonsense from around YouTube that has no relation to anything I watch taking up space when that could be applied to several rows and columns of things I do watch - my subscriptions - LIKE IT USED TO BE. For example, RT uploads dozens on videos a day which means I now have pages of single column views to go through to try to find what I want.

The only thing I welcomed was the change from white to grey for the background, but that had happened on my account a week or two ago.

Not that any of these comments will make a difference. Just like the last major change that drew massive criticism, people will just have to look for greasemonkey scripts or plugins to mangle the page formatting and layout back to something useable. Awesome. I am so very much looking forward to that.

I feel the need to add my feedback to the list. I enjoy the new colors and I can get used to the new layout but the problem I am having is that this new look feels less organized than the previous layout. Subscribed videos are just sitting in the center column and there is no way to remove videos that we have already seen or do not wish to view. I have to scroll for ages, it feels like, just to find the video I'm looking for. I realize that I could just pin the users to the left column but then what is the point of having the center column with the most recent updates if I have to go search for the video anyways.

I wish there was some way we could organize our own layouts instead of having things thrown at us like Facebook does. People don't like it when things change without a warning and we especially don't like having no control over the outcome. I doubt these comments matter, much, but I hope that you will at least read them.

I can't figure out which videos I've already watched and actually want to watch now because they don't get removed from the homepage. I also find it very very frustrating to have to scroll down the page to see what the people I'm subscribed to has uploaded. The only good feature is the fact it puts them in order of time uploaded. Add the x to hide/remove videos from the list and then extend the damn page. I have big white spaces on the left and right of the page and 2 small areas displaying my subscriptions and recommended which I always ignore. On this note why are there 2 recommended sections now? There are recommend channels then recommended videos, I don't really care about these, move the video recommendations a bit more to the right and expand the subscription box to the left and right to make it wider and it will look fine.

Additional after looking more........is your goal to get less page views. I know for a fact that the last revision caused me to reduce the number of vids I watched by about 90%. Now without a delete button I just want to unsubscribe rather then have all that crap on my home page.

I do like single page and left side, but the subscriptions lack of grouping by poster and inability to delete (and why have one's I deleted last week back on there?) make that section worthless.

Long post ahoy (copied from the thread I've made in YouTube's help forums).

Okay. I've got myself acquainted as possible with the new YouTube, and...

Yeah. It's far from perfect.

I'll start with the homepage. At first, I thought it was okay-ish, but the more I've looked around, the less I've liked it. Here are my main complaints.

1. Lack of organization. I really don't like the fact that it's not organized by who I've subbed to, and I don't sub to a lot of people because I tend to be really picky with this. The extra effort to just see recent videos doesn't help either. Also, we used to be able to remove videos we've already seen or don't want to watch. I'd like this feature to return.

2. No friends activity. Most of the videos I've found was because of my friends' likes and favorites. I don't know how many people actually used this, but I don't like being without this feature as I find YouTube's "recommendations" to be useless, which brings me to my next point...

3. YouTube's recommendations for channels and videos. Just get rid of it altogether or give us the option to hide it. Does anyone use this? Also, isn't that what the related videos on the video page is for?

4. Get rid of the Facebook and Google+ connections. Also, get rid of the "From YouTube" section or let us hide it.

As for the channels, they're not doing so hot in my opinion either. Here's why.

1. Lack of customization. No opacity control, and no option to change the module color. This really hurts the channel because I really like to customize the channel colors to my liking, and opacity control really brings out the background (and I usually make my own backgrounds). There's also the fact that you can't make descriptions longer than 1000 characters. I know you don't want to have an essay for a channel description, but there are some people who have a lot to say about their channel. Also, it appears you can't even customize the font either, but that's sorta minor in comparison.

2. Too much trouble to search for something. It took me forever to find the channel comments (which now seems to have a cutoff point as opposed to page numbers you can click around), and it's really annoying for a person to post a comment only to find out you have to switch from the recent activity feed to the actual comment.

3. Favorites as a playlist. This is more of a nitpick than anything, but why couldn't you have favorites in a separate tab like before? Why have it as a playlist? It just seems really awkward in my opinion.

4. The removal of the option to add to your friends list altogether. Yes, the friend invite system tends to be abused, but as a workaround... couldn't you have an option for whether or not you want to accept friend invites or not? If the person is open to friend invites, the "Invite as Friend" link will be there. Otherwise, the link won't be there. It's a lot easier than flat-out removing it. Because of this, there's no option for non-friend comment approval on channels or videos.

And those are my main complaints on the new YouTube. I know that we're all going to get used to this (and we pretty much will), but I just need to get my two cents out there.

Mastuck said...

Terrible Design...confusing (and not becaouse it's new. Because the videos are sorted badly and there is no space for anything because everything is too huge) and just ugly.

Have you ever heared "never touch a running system"? I guess you don't.

Everyone would be happy if there is an OPTION to keep the old design or switch to the new but i guess in some days/weeks we will all be forced to use this crap...

B. Yockel said...

I know we're all complaining and here's another one (not like they're going to listen though). I just found out I can't even edit my playlists. I deleted a few videos, but now I can't fix the list they were in. What the hell!? Also I'm trying to give this thing a chance but it feels incredibly clunky. What's the point of asking for feedback if you can't do anything about it when you complain.

The home page is a MESS! For people who are subscribed to a large number of channels, viewing new videos is horrendous. And to not have the ability to DELETE videos we choose not to watch or that have already been viewed?!

Seriously, YouTube/Google - isn't a business supposed to operate to please their 'customer' base? Removing key elements of what so many people loved about the site and adding useless updates and a less than impressive new 'look' is not the way to please your users. Functionality is FAR more important that appearance.

I sincerely hope that you actually implement the suggestions given here and don't brush off the users who have made this site what it is.

bbbbbbbws said...

you guys like making life harder, dont you? remove the google plus account link, or at least give the effing option for users to opt out! And i dont have facebook, so why on earth do i have to stare at its tab which says 'connect' every time i go on??? Who cares about what partner channels YOU think i would like?

I want video functionality instead of social media merging with youtube. Fix the subscription alert issue (as in people dont get notifications when people they are subscribed to post a new video) instead of bothering with these new "updates".

There is still the issue of not being able to remove a video from my feed after i've watched it, nor being able to see my subscription videos in a orderly manner side-by-side instead of cascading into the unending abyss. Riddiculous!!!

You'd think that being Google, your designers would've come up with a satisfying design, but it seems that instead of designing it to perfection, you were eager to launch it to make some more cash out of what you'd save from the color changes and the advertisements/partner program.

Miguel Furtado said...

3.Daily uploaders over-shadow one's who upload on a rare basis.

All of my con's are about the home page, because it is what is most important to myself.

One small thing, remember on the best version of youtube (the one with the stars) it had a rating by the thumbnail of the video so I know if I'm clicking on crap or not, could you add that?

I REALLY MISS HAVING HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS on the video page!!! It is now EXTREMELY DIFFICULT without highlighted comments to locate a previously made comment - especially on very popular channels that have many subscribers commenting. When someone replies to my comment, I need to locate it to recall what they are replying to. Now, because of LOSS OF THIS FEATURE, finding one of my comments is EXTREMELY TIME CONSUMING and can be VERY DIFFICULT, especially on very popular channels/videos. HIGHLIGHTING COMMENTS SAVES A LOT OF TIME AND ENERGY. PLEASE RESUME THIS APPRECIATED FEATURE.

im not a big fan of the 'recent activity' section. It comprises 50% of the screen area. I rarely subscribe to anything, consequently, 50% of my page is empty.

They better not force us to get rid of our friends! I can handle almost any kind of change, no matter how horrible it may be but let us have our friends, subscriptions and subscribers!

Attention everyone at YouTube: Don't mess with our friends!!

Joy said...

Let us keep our friends! It's not fair to remove us having friends on here!

Joy said...

This is not right YouTube! DO NOT remove our friends! We have friends on here for a reason. Let us keep our friends.

The new design is absolutely terrible. Whoever designed it needs to go back to web design 101.

I swear it's like Google and Facebook sit around in their board meetings and go "What can we change that will make our fans rage the hardest for lulz?"

Trickymaster said...

No new channel designs, please. Thank you.

Joy said...

It's not right to remove our channel comments and friends! Do not do this to us YT! We want our channel comments and friends!!

Joy said...

YouTube, you are really angering tons and tons of people and robbing us of everything we love about YouTube. We want our friends and we want our channel comments to stay on our pages. It's not right and not fair of you to delete our friends and channel comments. You are robbing us. We deserve to keep our channel comments on our pages from people that we've had for years and our friends that we've had for years. Give us back our friends and do not remove our channel comments. Do not force us to leave YouTube which is what will happen if you don't give us our friends back and let us keep our channel comments that we've had on our pages.

Joy said...

You are alienating everyone from YT. Please just let us have our YT the way it was. We deserve better than this. DO NOT force these changes on us!!!!!

This is horrible. The new layout is completely disorganized and nearly impossible to navigate. I've been on YouTube since 2006 and have gone through a lot of layout changes; this is by far the worst.

I Hate this design i still cant watch any video anymore since just shows the same ones cant get rid of them so don't even both going to my favorite site anymore=(

Customizable channel my ass. OOOOOOHHHHH I get a choice of one color and that's the background color. Pointless when someone has a background images. I also lost all of my channel comments from before and now forced into a channel layout I DON'T WANT and modules I DON'T TO APPEAR AT ALL!!!! Give people back the customizable features from before and don't make it so simple and mandatory because dumbass people can't figure out how to customize.

GeMa freelabel said...

I think - after you loose a lot of users, you will go back to the old page, but it will be too late..
Some features maybe nice, but the most things you changed are really unprofessional work..
Who gave you the responce that this new
design must be?
We use the channel as a label and we loved
the possibilities of the old style.
But with the new style we will waste our
time.
If the reason is, to get more advertises
viewed by people that watch videos, so you forgot in your changes the needs of the creators.
That is not really wise..

As always with new design people moan without even properly giving it a go. i like all the new changes, get on with it if you don't like then GTFO don't discourage YouTube from improving this site.

Suggestion:
Send us an email once youtube is worth to use again, so we don't need to check if the current design its been removed already.

I have found a SERIOUS performance issue with the new YouTube player! Kaspersky is going crazy scanning the video stream. Something to do with protocols or how YouTube is choosing to stream or the new player itself?

Kaspersky never scanned YouTube video streams this much EVER before. It thinks there is a threat coming from YouTube.

Why are a lot of uploads missing from my sub box? The whole point of having a sub box is so that I can see when a user I subscribe to uploads a video, but it's only showing about 2 out of 6 uploaded videos from a channel.

I'd say that this new layout looks a lot better, but is much, much less comfortable to use.

ValisHD said...

Make the partner banners appear on the new layout and the deletion icon on the videos we just watchedadded. If you guys can do that then i can adapt to the whole new change.

Admin said...

Please put my YouTube homepage back to how it was. It made more sense then, now it's a major mess and basically stinks.

I don't like the new YouTube channel either, so I stuck with the older style.

I sure hope YouTube listens to all the negative comments, and puts it back.

Why change something that is not broken?

Guy said...

For the love of God, stop changing stuff that don't need to be changed.

All the changes you guys make are complete shit and are confusing.

madzanta said...

With the latest updates I have gone from spending hours a day on youtube to not visiting the site at all. This is really bad, makes subscriptions useless.

Kevin said...

Please bring back a way to clear videos from your homepage without having to watch each one.

Allen said...

The new home page layout is TERRIBLE. It is a step backward in user-friendliness and usefulness in every way. The ability to have a page full of JUST my subscriptions OR recommendation was far more usable and easier to scan through for content. Now, that "subscriptions" column is a user-hostile mess of unsorted data - I have to scan through the entire list AND CLICK for more on each entry??? Stupid design. It makes the content HARDER to find and requires MORE CLICKS to get to, violating two CARDINAL RULES of web app design.

And you've sacrificed the former usability for what? Being able to cram, both subs and recommendations onto one page...? For what possible benefit to the user? Now I see less content in a more cramped space AND it's more poorly organized. Fail upon fail.

AND, to add insult, you've removed the ability to delete individual items from either column. I don't WANT to have to watch every single video just to get rid of it! And the leftmost column is useless to me. Before, if a channel uploaded a new video, it appeared in my subscriptions. SIMPLE. Now I have to dig and sort and click and it's all just a pain to deal with.

In short, this new home layout ruins what was a very workable user interface and honestly make me want to not use the site anymore. Give us the option to switch back to the previous model, with everything INTACT.

MSM007 said...

I need my remove video button back, with that the new homepage will be manageable, I shouldn't have to remember whether or not I passed on watching something or not.

Harperlarp said...

Everyone seems to be complaining about the new uploads on the home screen. I say get rid of the home screen altogether! It's useless. When I want to check my subscriptions I click on m avatar (top right) and choose subscriptions, and they're all there, in one place, just like it was with the old layout. Just turn the homepage into a subscription only page and everyone will be happy.

Also I can't directly respond to a reply to one of my comments using my inbox liek I used to be able to do. Why is this?

f1truths said...

Are you reading the reactions here, on Twitter and everywhere else?

Don't you realise you have made a mistake?

That's not the Google way of doing things.

MikeD said...

I never really get involved in these things however when something is working just fine, please don't try and fix it if it's not broken. British Airways tried it with their branding, the Post Office, well the less said the better about that one. Keep what works, thats why you bought it? Introduce your changes as an option, your competitors are just waiting for you to make the same mistake. I really enjoy creating channel graphics, youtube is looking so good. You have thousands of loyal YouTube designers keeping you number one. Add the functionality to your existing channel designs and secure your future, stop trying to reinvent the wheel.

First: forgive me for my english (I'm italian....).

Please, people, I beg you: stop complaining.
Instead, DO SOMETHING that youtube cannot ignore: PUT YOUR VIDEOS AS PRIVATE.
No videos, no ads, no money for youtube. Simple as that.

Your choice, youtube. Listen to your users, or go bankrupt.

Edgar said...

I agree the new youtube design is not good. Where are the friends and subscriptions. I consider my subscriptions and friends my friends that I love. It is so disorganize. Apocalypse is coming. Maybe that is the reason why youtube change it for the worse. Keep all the functions in the old one available. It is not all about the money.====tbc====....

james42519 said...

change it back now. you already showed you could have both sites with www.youtube.com changed and www.youtube.com/home left as the old for a few days. lets us choose. why take away delete videos in subs that you seen already or don't want to see? why are the comments on the site lagging now too? stop changing stuff when you don't fix the stuff you break from other changes. this might be enough to make me stop using it as much as i do.

Unknown said...

Okay, here's what I think.

New homepages:
Not too bad. There's quite a lot of room for improvement, but overall they are....kinda okay. It IS a bit of a mess still with all the random subscriptions like that, but I like that left bar subscription idea thing.

But really, I don't want Google and Facebook on there -_-. I'm one of those people that are not on facebook (yet), so I'd rather not have it shoved down my throught daily wherever I go.

Channels....

....oh heck, THEY ARE AWFUL. Remember how much negative feedback the 2.0 channels got? No? Well, I was certainly one of the people that deeply hated it, and these new channels make me suddenly love 2.0, which should say something.

Why? Just why? Firstly, not all of us put our names as our title, meaning mine says "About I like trains". I just threw that in as a little asdfmovie reference and you've ruined it! Also, the profile thing has be screwed up. You've limited it to 200? That's just bullshit. We want to make it personal, so we need to describe ourselves! And most of us just have descriptions that fade away after they shortly go down. (Take a look, and you'll see what I mean). Also, the whole layout thing is a total mess, and isn't personal at all. I have a life, so stop treating us like....whatever bad creature you think we are....

But worst of all, channel comments....really? You completely hided them? That was a great way to communicate publically and let people like me, yet you took it away.

For awhile now, I have been always describing the new Youtube as a dictatorship. And to be honest, I think you (Google) would agree. How often do you ever listen to us? We keep saying that we want a free choice, but you completely ignore us, which takes the purpose of this site away. I guess this comment (and all the others) is a waste too, because you wont listen to us -_-

SilentNutcracker said...

This is what you call a customizable channel? Sorry but this is b*llsh*t. you can't customize anything but the background color and which types (videos, playlists, etc.) YouTube picks to be shown on your channels start page. Why can't i decide which videos, playlists, etc. i want to show on the first page??? why can't i chose which channel modules i want to show like it was before? why are you making youtube worse everytime you do an update?
As soon as everybody is forced to use the new design, youtube will be a grey, boring and miserable place on the internet. Please rethink this and start working on improvements your users realy want. Because so far i haven't read one comment that says the new design would be appreciated. YouTube can NOT ignore their users all the time!!!

The new You Tube SUCKS, all capital letters, put it back to the way it was. Nothing I have tried to find, and have seen before comes up, when I search, using the same names as before, PUT YOU TUBE BACK LIKE IT WAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unknown said...

You Tube Sucks now, nothing i search for comes up, just what the search engine desides to bring up, nothing in the area I am looking it. I can't even find my own channel with this new You Tube, lucky I have my sign in set up on my computer or I would never find my own channel. You people better look at this, it just might become your downfall, I suggest putting You Tube back like it was, before someone starts another video blog site, and shoves You Tube up your ass. You know history repeats itself. David and Goliath is possible.

Cosmic Panda, it smells like the Panda has left already, and left a pile of fesses here on You Tube. How many people will it take before you realize this new You Tube is a piece of Panda Dung.
