JOHN R. SEARLE, Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, was educated at the University of Wisconsin and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He taught in Oxford from 1956 until 1959, and has been a professor at Berkeley since 1959. Professor Searle has held visiting professorships at a dozen universities in various countries, including Austria, Brazil, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, and the United Kingdom. He has also delivered lectures at universities and before professional groups throughout Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Scholars have written widely about Professor Searle’s works. He has written 12 books and more than 150 articles, and his work has been translated into 21 languages. He was awarded a Fulbright fellowship twice and has been a Guggenheim Fellow. In 2000, Professor Searle received the Jovellanos Prize (Spain), Jean Nicod Prize (France), and the Tasan Award (Korea). His publications include: Speech Acts: An Essay in the Philosophy of Language (1969); Campus War (1972); Minds, Brains, and Science (1984); Construction of Social Reality (1995); Mystery of Consciousness (1997); and Rationality in Action (2001). Among his recent books is Making the Social World: The Structure of Human Civilization (2010).
