Established in 1984, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) coordinates civil space-borne observations of the Earth. Participating agencies strive to enhance international coordination and data exchange and to optimize societal benefit. Currently, 52 members and associate members made up of space agencies, national, and international organizations participate in CEOS planning and activities. New Release: The CEOS Response to the GCOS IP-10: Executive Summary
In August 2010, the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) released the updated Implementation Plan for the Global Observing System for Climate in Support of the UNFCCC (GCOS IP-10), providing an updated set of Actions required to implement and maintain a comprehensive global observing system for climate. Soon thereafter, CEOS was invited by the Conference of the Parties (COP) of UNFCCC and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) to provide an updated report on achievements around responding to the space-related needs of the GCOS IP-10. Prepared by the CEOS Climate Societal Benefit Coordinator team, CEOS Working Group on Climate, experts in the terrestrial, atmosphere, and ocean domains, and with input from the Virtual Constellations/Working Groups, this report represents the CEOS response to the space-based observation requirements in GCOS IP-10 and its 2011 Systematic Observation Requirements for Satellite-based Data Products for Climate (the “satellite supplement”).

The 26th CEOS Plenary Meeting from 24-27 October, 2012
The CEOS Plenary will be hosted by the current CEOS Plenary Chair, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), in Bengaluru, India. ISRO welcomes CEOS colleagues to India and encourages every CEOS Agency to participate in the full and productive agenda to review progress on CEOS’ 2012 accomplishments and to plan CEOS activities for the coming years. Sep 2012 - Meteor-M N2 (Meteor-M Meteorological Satellite N2; ROSHYDROMET/ROSKOSMOS) |
Recent Achievements
September 17, 2012 - Congratulations to EUMETSAT on the successful launch of Metop-B, a polar-orbiting satellite that will make observations critical to Numerical Weather Prediction, climate, and environmental monitoring. The launch service provider, Starsem, the Roscosmos teams at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, ESA, CNES, NOAA and the European industrial consortium led by EADS Astrium all played a role in the successful launch. Once operational, Metop-B will be the second European satellite in the Initial Joint Polar System (IJPS) signed in 1998 and shared by Europe and the USA. | |

September 9, 2012 - Congratulations to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on the successful launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C21 (PSLV-C21) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. SPOT-6, a CNES (France) Earth observation satellite capable of imaging the earth with a resolution of 1.5 m, was successfully launched from this vehicle. |

August 30, 2012 - EUMETSAT signed a cooperation agreement with China State Oceanic Administration’s (SOA’s) National Satellite Ocean Application Service (NSOAS). Under the agreement, EUMETSAT will provide data from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) instruments flying on the Metop satellites as well as from the Jason-2 and Jason-3 ocean topography missions. NSOAS/SOA will provide data from the HY-1 and HY-2 satellites, adding Chinese altimeter, radiometer, and scatterometer data to EUMETSAT’s portfolio of third party data. The agreement also covers cooperation on data processing, scientific activities, calibration and validation. Find more information at www.eumetsat.int. |
