Selected Images From the Collections of the Library of Congress

Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress,
Washington, D.C., 20540-4730

These images were selected to meet requests regularly received by the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division. Not all wives of presidents are included--only those who served as first ladies and for whom the Prints and Photographs Division holds an original print or photograph. The images are presented for educational and research purposes. The Library of Congress is unaware of any restrictions on the use of the images. However, patrons who plan to publish or otherwise distribute any of the images should be aware that determination regarding the appropriate use of an image ultimately rests with the patron. The Library generally does not own rights to material in its collections. Therefore, it does not charge permission fees for use of such material and cannot give or deny permission for use of the images. For further information, see "Copyright and Other Restrictions ... Assessing the Risk of Using a P&P Image."

The first ladies are presented in three arrangements:

  1. Images in alphabetical order:
  2. Alphabetical list of names, with links to images
  3. Chronological list of Presidents, First Ladies, and Vice Presidents of the United States, with links to images

(Note: This selection of images is also presented in the American Memory offering, By Popular Demand: Portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies.)

Photographic copies of the images may be ordered through the Library of Congress Duplication Services.

References to additional images on this subject can be found by searching the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog by the names of first ladies. (The Prints and Photographs Division does not have photographs of Laura Bush; they must be requested from the George W. Bush Presidential Library.)

Companion reference aids for U.S. Presidents and Vice Presidents are also available.
