Meeting 1 Press Release
STATEMENT FROM COMMISSION CO-CHAIRS
THE HONORABLE BOB GRAHAM AND THE HONORABLE WILLIAM K. REILLY
July 3, 2010
The Commission will convene its first public meeting in New Orleans July 12 and 13. The purpose of this meeting is to hear directly from the people of the Gulf Coast whose lives and livelihoods have been so profoundly affected by the BP Deepwater Horizon spill. Their experiences will be the foundation for our recommendations to the American people, the President, and the Congress.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who have lost their lives in this disaster, and with all of the many people who have been harmed. We recognize and share the frustrations -- and the outrage -- of the people of the Gulf and all Americans. We will reach out to the public, affected parties, and technical experts to make an independent determination of what went wrong and to develop recommendations to avoid a disaster of this magnitude from happening again.
The Commission will rely upon the best available advice on regulatory, technical, legal, scientific and risk-management issues to ensure that any offshore drilling is done safely and with all due regard for the long-term economic and environmental health of the Gulf Coast.
