Jerry Jones had ‘volcanic’ confrontation with player in Cowboys locker room

Several reports coming out of the Dallas camp indicate that after the Cowboys' win over Philadelphia last Sunday, team owner Jerry Jones and nose tackle Jay Ratliff got into a verbal confrontation so severe that team personnel had to separate the two. Jones, who has a habit of talking to players in the locker room after games to offer encouragement or prodding, apparently walked up to the oft-injured Ratliff and said just three words: "We need you."

Ratliff then got to his feet and an argument ensued. Credit Jones; the 70-year-old didn't back down from the 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman (though the fact that Jones signs Ratliff's checks might have had something to do with it). Team officials had to separate what one individual called a "volcanic" confrontation.

"They're both passionate men and great men and they want to win, that's all it is," an anonymous source told Dallas' CBS affiliate. "But they were in each other's faces. People had to intervene."

Ratliff is one year into a five-year, $40 million contract. His replacement, Josh Brent, now faces intoxication and manslaughter charges stemming from Saturday's accident, meaning the team could use Ratliff. But he hasn't played since Nov. 18, and he's missed seven games this year due to a variety of injuries. He has 25 tackles and no sacks this year.

This also isn't the first time Ratliff has had a locker room confrontation; last year, he and a Cowboys beat reporter got into a shouting match.

Locker room arguments aren't the kind of problem Dallas needs right now. And Ratliff probably ought to remember that you probably shouldn't get into screaming fights with your boss. Never good for the long-term prospects.

If I was making that much doing nothing I don't think it would bother me if a 70 year old dude came up to me and said: We need you.
I might take it the wrong way but hey it's nice to be needed.

Not a Jerry Jones fan but the fact is that many of these pro's get their contracts and then do nothing! It is a joke that athletes aren't paid by performance, too many great players are underpaid and too many chumps are overpaid. Not saying this guy is really a chump because if he is hurt then he is hurt, but just speaking in general terms.

        Wow.

IRVING — The Cowboys and Pro Bowl nose tackle Jay Ratliff have agreed to a
five-year, $40 million contract extension this morning. As part of the deal, $18 million is guaranteed and $10 million will be up-front money in a signing bonus.

That took a whole 20 seconds to find out.

Jerry Jones is & always has been the problem with the Cowboys, but Jay Ratliffe should know you don't bite the hand that feed's you.Especially when your on the first year of a 40 million dollar contract & have missed 7 games.Look's like Jay will get a change of scenery next year.

I agree, the Cowboys have all kinds of talent. Still Jerry Jones persists on sticking his nose in on the field affairs. When was the last time you saw a team owner from another franchise interfering with play calling? He's why Bill Parcells left. But, for all his faults, he's right on this account.

I think the implication was that Jones saw the tragedy in terms of his team's prospects. "We need you" because your replacement is going to jail.

Ya don't suppose things are wired a little tight there in Cowboyland after the car accident ?
    • Nick M  •  8 hours ago
"We need you" Probably the most innocent words uttered by Jerry Jones. Ratcliff really overracted. He Overracted because there is a difference between playing hurt and playing injured. Ratcliff doesn't play hurt, matter a fact I think he's faking and is collecting a pay check.

Ratliff another idiot in the NFL, I guess they are trying to compete with the NBA as far as who has the least class. How come Hockey does not have all of these problems.
    • Timothy  •  6 hours ago
Jerry Jones: What?! You can't yell at me like that!!!!!
Jay Ratliff: I can yell at you anytime, I'm ready to find a new job!!!!!!

The headline read that the Dead NFL player never had a bad day! Uhh yeah he had one bad one in particular!,As for Jerry Jones he has ruined one of the greatest sports brands ever and done it single handedly Its amazing how ones ego can be so screwed up that it blinds them,Jimmy Johnson was the smartest guy in the room when he burned off and left in that thinktanks hands,(1) playoff win in 14 years ou cant escape the scoreboard!

No one ever accused football players of being smart. Ask Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell how quickly the money and the NFL career can disappear.
