Vikings punter Chris Kluwe campaigns for Ray Guy via uniform Post-it note

Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe is known for being outspoken. He has been a vocal proponent of gay rights, and he often uses his Twitter account to stump for important causes.

During the Vikings' 21-14 win over the Bears, Kluwe used his uniform to push for another matter close to his heart. Kluwe covered up the Hall of Fame 50th Anniversary patch on his uniform with a simple message written on a Post-it note. "Vote Ray Guy."

Kluwe wants to see Guy become the first punter in the Hall of Fame. His numbers support his election. Over 14 seasons, Guy averaged 42.4 yards per punt. He was in the top five of the leagues' punters for his entire career. His longest punt was 77 yards.

But the Hall of Fame voters don't often honor players whose only impact was on special teams. Guy told Yahoo! Sports that his absence in Canton can be blamed on voters not understanding what punters do for a team.

As a punter, Kluwe understands what his position does for his team. The likelihood of a fine for putting a personal message on a uniform didn't stop Kluwe. It would be nice if the Hall of Fame voters would show the same guts.

Before Ray Guy, terms like "hang time" and "field position" were rarely heard outside the chalk room. Punting was viewed as surrender, but Guy (and Madden) turned it into a weapon. He should have been in 5 years after retirement, not a posthumous pick by the veterans committee fifty years from now.

I thought it was about Offense, Defense, and SPECIAL TEAMS. Field position MATTERS.

If there was ever a punter who made opposing coaches change their game plan, it would be Ray Guy. He was a force. As a kid I had the pleasure of seeing him play and he could change a game. I once saw him punt with a hang time of around six seconds. I remember the announcers joking about whether the ball would ever come down. Ray Guy changed the game and as such I personally think he belongs in the HOF.

A great situational punter also changes a coaches plan for fielding punts, i.e. more likely to call for a fair catch or set up returns down the sidelines.

Look at it this way...if kickers & punters aren't important enough to get inducted, then try having a team WITHOUT a good kicker/punter...life is harder isn't it?

Why shouldn't people like Lou Groza or Ray Guy make it into the Hall of Fame? They should designate one spot for special teams players for the Hall of Fame inductions every year.

Vanderjagt? Too funny. You lost me right there.

Ray Guy should be in the hall of fame...by far the best punter ever. the man used to hit the roof of the superdome

Wow, Ray Guy isn't in the hall of fame? That's insane!

Happy that Yahoo was able to recognize this, but Hendricks needs to do more justice for Ray Guy than giving a short synopsis of his career stats. Ray Guy was a punter who changed games for the Raiders during his time and needs to be voted in.

Pat, that would require Saggie to do research and actually try to write some original content instead of just rehashing someone else's material.

        Ain't gonna happen...

Good for Kluwe. Ray Guy deserves it.

I always thought the hall of fame was for the best guy at his position. Ray Guy was the greatest punter ever to step on the field, so he is due to join the hall now.

Ray Guy should be in the Hall of Fame. He was THE name everyone knew among punters in his era. Heck, I still couldn't name one-third of active punters in the NFL.

It is ridiculous Ray Guy is not in the HOF.

I couldnt agree more...when anyone with any football knowledge thinks punter..they immediately think Ray Guy....he defined the position
    • Jimatmad  •  1 day 3 hours ago
Name 3 punters from before 2000 that weren't on 'your' team.

Ray Guy for sure, Reggie Roby maybe, and then who?

Ray Guy changed the face of punting forever & should be considered a pioneer in that dept. As such he rightfully deserves a place in the National Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, where my brother was born. From what I've read about Mr Guy, he's a very nice, humble gentleman & ranked 2nd all time in yards per punt when he retired. Teams rarely, if ever, got decent field position after a Ray Guy punt. Put Mr Guy in the Hall of Fame, where he rightfully belongs PERIOD.

only a kicker could put a post-it-note on his jersey and not have it fall off during the game
      • William 1 day 4 hours ago
        That escalated quickly....
    • Eric N  •  4 hours ago
For sure! Get a clue writers to have no punters in hall is just stupid.
    • D  •  11 hours ago
Then dont call it the HOF...call it the Hall for QBs, RBs, WRs, LBs, and maybe a TE or two.
    • Stephen  •  10 hours ago
I agree should have been in a while ago
    • JC  •  3 hours ago
Punters are weapons, pinning teams deep in their own end of the field, or bailing their team out of the shadow of their own goal posts with a booming kick - something Ray Guy was WELL known for. Isn't the Hall of Fame for guys who did what they do at a level of expertise way out in front of everybody else? Ray Guy - can't think of many more deserving. The man put dread in the heart of the other team when it came time to punt.

I kind of understand how people think punters are a dime a dozen, but some guys just rise above. Ray Guy was one of those guys.
I can't believe he didn't mention Reggie Roby, I mean dude wore his watch during the game.

coming from a packer fan, ray guy should be in. 77 yards is a big boot.

Good for him, he belongs in the HOF and I'm a Niner fan. No one did it better than guy.
