Fiscal Cliff Timeline
A set of major tax and spending policy changes are scheduled to occur on January 1 and 2, 2013. Unless Congress intervenes, these changes will have a substantial impact on the federal budget and the economy at large.
The Price of Inaction
If Iran achieves nuclear weapons capability, widespread instability could aggravate uncertainty about the security of energy production and transport, raising oil prices and negatively impacting the U.S. economy.

Debt Limit Analysis
The current statutory limit on federal debt outstanding was established at $16.394 trillion by the Budget Control Act of 2011 – the legislation resulting from last summer’s contentious debate over increasing the debt limit. As the federal government continues to spend substantially more than it collects in revenue – running deficits of over $1 trillion per year – federal debt is rapidly approaching the statutory limit once again.
BPC estimates that the debt limit will be reached in the final week of December 2012.
Health Care Spending
Over just the last 30 years, the percentage of our GDP devoted to spending on health care has doubled. This rapid growth in health expenditures creates an unsustainable burden on America’s economy, with far-reaching consequences.
BPC's Health Care Cost Containment Initiative plans to produce a comprehensive, bipartisan package of health care cost containment options that, if implemented together, could reduce system-wide health care costs, slow cost growth and improve the efficiency and quality of care in the United States.
