NASA’s founding legislation in 1958 instructed NASA to “…provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information…” The principles of Open Government have been embedded in our operations for 50 plus years. • Flagship Initiative - NASA's Web Environment: NASA will leverage open source to build an accessible, participatory and transparent web environment based on open and interoperable standards.
• Open Data at NASA: The open data movement at NASA includes further release of data sets, publishing data sets to data.gov, and developing strategies to process large data sets.
• Open Source at NASA: NASA is working to make open source software development more collaborative at the Agency and to establish processes, policies, and corporate culture to favor open source development.
• NASA’s Technology Accelerators: Multiple programs create ongoing communities of innovators while offer opportunities to collaboratively develop technology for use in space and on Earth.

• NASA continues to engage the nation and the world via a multitude of social media accounts, citizen science opportunities, and innovative partnerships.
• NASA’s prize program, Centennial Challenges, engages inventors from all over the country to successfully build technology prototypes for space.
• Virtual participation technology continues to engage citizen participation in NASA events like the Open Source Summit and IT Summit.
• Education outreach efforts like Summer of Innovation offer thousands of students unique, high-quality STEM education opportunities.
• NASA gives the public live access to its missions through NASA TV, available on the web as well as on apps for tablets and smartphones.
