NSF funds the best ideas and most promising people, searching out the frontiers of science and engineering to foster high-risk, potentially transformative research that will generate important discoveries and new technology.
Unlike many other federal agencies, NSF does not hire researchers or directly operate our own laboratories or similar facilities. Instead, we support scientists, engineers and educators directly through their own home institutions (typically universities and colleges). Similarly, we fund facilities and equipment such as telescopes through cooperative agreements with research consortia. Learn more about what we do.
Overview
On his first day in office, President Obama issued a directive stating his administration's commitment to "creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government." Government should be transparent. Government should be participatory. Government should be collaborative. In working to achieve transparency, public participation and collaboration, agencies across the government are establishing Open Government Web pages and asking the public for ideas and suggestions.
Recent Activities
Open Government Plan
On April 19, 2012, NSF published an update of the NSF Open Government Plan, NSF Open Government Plan 2.0. The revised plan, available at http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=opengov, updates the first plan NSF released on April 7, 2010. NSF Open Government Plan 2.0 now serves as the roadmap for the agency's plans to improve transparency, better integrate public participation and collaboration into its core mission, and become more innovative and efficient.
NSF viewed the original plan as a first draft. It published a self-evaluation of how well the plan met the requirements of the Open Government Directive, and sought additional public comment through an OpenNSF dialog site. This updated version of the plan responds to comments NSF received from evaluators and the public, and it reflects the agency's intent to revise and improve the plan to meet every requirement of the Open Government Directive. Revisions to the plan include: incorporation of NSF's 2011-2016 Strategic Plan; new flagship initiatives; updates to NSF-provided datasets and new inter-agency collaborations. For comparison, the initial agency plan can be viewed at http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf10049. NSF continues to seek public input on the plan and on the agency's other open government activities. Comments may be sent to opengov@nsf.gov.
