Partnering with communities helps bring books and reading to all children.

Throughout Scholastic corporate headquarters in New York's SoHo, employees are surrounded by Scholastic's mission and credo—literally. The words, printed on the carpet, wind down hallways and through the building. It's a powerful image for those who visit: that Scholastic is a corporate citizen of a truly global world, and takes the Company mission seriously.

Scholastic works with you to help create literacy-rich homes, schools and communities. For 90+ years, we've been in business to ensure that all children have the opportunity to become strong readers and life-long learners. We tap into our core strengths of publishing and distribution to improve the lives of underserved children through partnerships, innovative outreach programs, and strategic in-kind giving, addressing the realities that many children do not grow up in literacy-rich environments or have access to quality books, and that families need information and assistance as they support their children's development as readers and learners.

We believe our greatest contribution to helping tackle today's challenging education and learning issues is to provide meaningful and effective programs and materials that help create and sustain literacy and learning-rich environments in our homes, schools and communities. We value collaboration with public, private, and non-profit organizations that share our goals.

Equity in Education

Scholastic Book Grants is an in-kind giving initiative that provides high-quality reading materials to children in need, To find out more about our Book Grants program or to learn how your organization or school could benefit, click here. We also established Rebuilding for Learning, a collaboration with the UCLA Center for Mental Health in Schools to help states and districts transform education systems to ensure equal opportunities for success for all students. Rebuilding for Learning is based on 30 years of research by Drs. Howard Adelman and Linda Taylor and builds the capacity of state and district leaders to develop proactive systems to address barriers to learning and teaching, and to re-engage students who have become disengaged from classroom instruction.

Long-term Disaster Response

Recently, Scholastic partnered with Save the Children to establish the Scholastic Education Recovery Fund, a long-term fund to benefit the children of Haiti and others in need. It was seeded by a $50,000 contribution from Scholastic following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, as well as an additional $50,000 contribution from Scholastic in connection with the 2010 publication of a new paperback edition of Hope Is an Open Heart by Lauren Thompson. Scholastic also donated $10,000 in connection with the publication of Eight Days: A Story of Haiti by Edwidge Danticat (illus. Elix Delinois) to the International Rescue Committee, which provides help and hope to children in Haiti and other crisis zones around the world. In addition, we created Scholastic My Time, A Box for Comfort and Fun™, a "comfort kit" for children affected by disasters or crisis situations. Based on principles from the fields of child development and mental health, the kit features tools that can be used to help children handle stress and anxiety. There are two versions of the kit, one for grades K–3 and one for grades 4–6. Scholastic has donated more than 30,000 kits to date.

Literacy and Learning Achievement Gaps

Scholastic created the successful Read and Rise/Leer da Poder program, a national literacy initiative to bring families, schools and communities together to support children's literacy development. Find out more about this comprehensive, bilingual program here. Another program to address the gap issue is YouInnovate21.net, which prepares and engages students for the increasing technological demands of our 21st Century economy. YouInnovate21.net gets young people excited about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and hones skills that will enable today's youth to be innovators of their century, and is a joint program with the National Governors Association.

Support of Cultural and Civic Education and Participation

Through Scholastic's sponsorship of The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, we've helped honor creative teens since 1923 – including a noteworthy roster of past winners like Andy Warhol and Sylvia Plath. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards offer scholarships and recognition in 28 categories of art and writing and, to date, have recognized more than 9 million young artists and writers. And finally, our employees embrace the Scholastic mission and credo in real ways, too. Staff participate in Scholastic Reads, serving as volunteer readers in NYC public schools; work special Book Fair events in cities like Orlando; and donate their time spreading the message of literacy across the globe.
