  2. On this day of family, friends and giving thanks, we would like to acknowledge everyone who has given of themselves to help others, particularly following Hurricane Sandy; from a neighbor helping another neighbor, to volunteers giving their time, to all our partners here and around the globe, we impart to you a heartfelt thank you.
  3. ALERT: It has come to our attention that individuals in The Rockaways have stolen Team Rubicon shirts and signage and are falsifying their involvement with TR while trying to charge residents for services. Please be aware that these are misrepresentations and that Team Rubicon never has, and never will, charge for services.

  28. See the video below and learn how to avoid getting scammed by phony building contractors and other scam artists looking to take advantage of disaster survivors. Here are some additional tips:
    • If your home’s damage is visible from the str...
eet, you may be especially vulnerable to the phony housing inspector who claims to represent FEMA or the U.S. Small Business Administration. Ask to see a badge, don’t give out bank account numbers (FEMA inspectors never require banking information), and know that FEMA housing inspectors do NOT hire or endorse specific contractors to fix homes or recommend repairs or determine cost estimates.
    • If someone claiming to be from FEMA or the state visits, calls or emails you asking for your Social Security number, bank account number or other sensitive information, beware. Provide your Social Security number and banking information only when registering for FEMA assistance, either by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585, or going online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via a web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov.
    • Know that federal and state workers do not solicit or accept money. FEMA and SBA staff never charge applicants for disaster assistance, inspections or help in filling out applications. If in doubt, do not give out information, and report people claiming to be government workers to local police.
