See the video below and learn how to avoid getting scammed by phony building contractors and other scam artists looking to take advantage of disaster survivors. Here are some additional tips:
• If your home’s damage is visible from the str...eet, you may be especially vulnerable to the phony housing inspector who claims to represent FEMA or the U.S. Small Business Administration. Ask to see a badge, don’t give out bank account numbers (FEMA inspectors never require banking information), and know that FEMA housing inspectors do NOT hire or endorse specific contractors to fix homes or recommend repairs or determine cost estimates.See More
• If someone claiming to be from FEMA or the state visits, calls or emails you asking for your Social Security number, bank account number or other sensitive information, beware. Provide your Social Security number and banking information only when registering for FEMA assistance, either by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585, or going online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via a web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov.
• Know that federal and state workers do not solicit or accept money. FEMA and SBA staff never charge applicants for disaster assistance, inspections or help in filling out applications. If in doubt, do not give out information, and report people claiming to be government workers to local police.FEMA Sandy shared American Red Cross's photo.

Five new Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are opening to assist survivors of Hurricane Sandy. At these centers, disaster survivors can meet one-on-one with officials from voluntary and non-profit agencies, local communities, and state and f...ederal agencies such as FEMA and the Small Business Administration. Personnel staffing the DRCs are there to answer questions from survivors about the types of assistance available, how to apply for assistance and details about how exactly the recovery process works. It is important to note that survivors do not need to visit DRCs to apply for assistance. The centers are simply another resource that FEMA is using to get everyone the help they need.
