NLS: Overseas Outlook

July to December 2009; Volume 32, Number 2

Returning to the United States

If you are planning to return to the United States permanently, please notify the overseas librarian in advance of your move.  This will enable the smooth transfer of your records, ensuring that you continue receiving service from the library in your new state of residence.

Online catalog

The online catalog is accessible from the NLS home page at www.loc.gov/nls.  You can search the online catalog by author’s name, title, and subject.  Braille books are identified by the prefix “BR,” “BRA,” recorded cassettes by the prefix “RC,” and digital books by “DB,” followed by the book numbers.  Patrons may access Braille Book Review and Talking Book Topics online, as well as browse the web site to learn more about braille and talking-book services.

Digital talking-book machines

NLS is making available two kinds of digital talking-book players: standard and advanced.  Both players are about 6 x 9 x 2 inches, in comparison with the cassette book machine (C-1), which is 9 x 11 x 3 inches.  The weight of the digital talking-book player is slightly more than two pounds compared to the C-1’s seven pounds.  The standard and advanced models both have power, rewind, play, fast-forward, sleep, and volume buttons that feature raised edges and a braille letter on the player’s surface to help the user identify them.

In addition, the advanced model has buttons for setting and retrieving bookmarks and buttons to navigate through the structured levels of a book.

Readers of fiction will likely prefer the standard model while those who read nonfiction or need to navigate to particular parts of their books may prefer an advanced model.  Please let the overseas librarian know as soon as possible which machine you would like to receive.

Blank cartridges available for purchase

In a coordinated effort with the Library of Congress, Independent Living Aids (ila), LLC, is offering USB cables and blank NLS cartridges to libraries and patrons for purchase.  The cartridges are identical to the ones on which NLS distributes its digital books, however the ila cartridges are not write-protected.  The cartridges are blank so patrons and libraries can download materials directly from the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) web site at nlsbard.loc.gov to any computer and then transfer the book to the cartridge for reading with the NLS digital talking-book player.  A USB transfer cable is required.  Additionally the ila cartridges are green so they can be distinguished from the white NLS-owned cartridges.

Currently, ila offers cartridges with 1GB of memory space; 2GB cartridges will be available in 2010.  Cartridges may be purchased separately or with a USB transfer cable.  For more information or to make a purchase, visit www.independentliving.com External link symbol on the Internet and select “New Products.”

Choice magazine now available on BARD

Choice magazine is now available as a free digital download on the NLS BARD at nlsbard.loc.gov.  The cassette edition will continue to be available.

Produced six times a year, each issue contains unabridged works from publications such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, and the New Yorker.

Minibibliography: Women’s Health

Each issue of Overseas Outlook includes a bibliography on a subject that may be of interest to NLS patrons.  This issue features a minibibliography on women’s health.  The listing represents a small selection of the many books available from the NLS collection.  To receive any of the books in this bibliography, complete the order form at the end of the newsletter and return it to the overseas librarian.  More titles can be found by visiting the NLS catalog at www.loc.gov/nls and clicking on “Search the Catalog.”
