Introduction

This reference circular presents selected sources of large-print materials for purchase or loan. The sources are United States publishers or distributors, specialized libraries, and associations for persons with visual impairments. Several of these sources also provide general information about low vision. Type is measured in points from the bottom of the lowest letter (for example, the tail of the letter "y") to the tallest capital; type one-inch high measures 72 points. Most adult books are set in 10- to 12-point type, newspapers are often 8-point, and some editions of the Bible are in 6-point type. The minimum size for large-print materials is 14-point type. Large-print materials are most commonly available in 16- to 18-point type. This reference circular is in 14-point type. When known, point size is included

Large-print materials are easiest to read if they are printed with heavy leading (spacing between the lines of print), wide margins, simple type, and non-glossy paper

Many states have agencies for the blind with a store that sells large-print materials such as dictionaries, calendars, clocks, games, and playing cards. Many public libraries have large-print collections or are able to provide large-print materials through interlibrary loan. Magazines in Special Media, www.loc.gov/nls/reference/directories/magazines.html, lists magazines in large print, as well as other special formats. Bibles and Other Sacred Writings in Special Media, www.loc.gov/nls/reference/circulars/bibles.html, lists Bibles and sacred texts in large print, as well as other special formats. Facts: 2005 Calendars, www.loc.gov/nls/reference/factsheets/calendars2005.html, lists calendars in large print and in braille. All above mentioned publications are available free upon request from the Reference Section, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20542
