The two-track commercial abridged edition contained on one cassette is being mailed to all Friends members, and a limited number of copies are available free to _Talking Book Topics_ readers. The book tells of a man who responds to an ad seeking a pupil who desires to save the world and finds Ishmael, a gorilla who telepathically communicates why humankind is destroying the environment. Ishmael explains that since the agricultural revolution, the myth that the earth belongs to humans has led them to destroy other species. Conversely, some species didn't follow this track and still obey the peacekeeping laws of nature. The book contains some strong language. _Ishmael_ won the 1991 Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, established to encourage authors to seek "creative and positive solutions to global problems." The author is a former executive in educational publishing who left his career to take up writing. He currently gives lectures on environmental and future-oriented issues.
