Joining the Marines at 17, Robert Corwin was placed in a unit where anybody that was 20 years old was considered an old man. His division saw intense action at Guadalcanal in the Battle of Tenaru and Battle of Bloody Ridge, where Corwin was shot twice, once in the shoulder and once in the leg, while trying to help a fallen soldier. Corwin was evacuated and received treatments for his wounds. He would later be put on detail at The Brooklyn Navy Yard, from which he would request a medical discharge because of his wounds.
