As a member of the First Signal Brigade, embedded in various Army units in Vietnam for a month or two at a time, motion picture photographer John Luckey experienced the same action as the soldiers whose activities he was documenting. Whether he was with the artillery, a medivac helicopter unit, or the Army Rangers--when they encountered enemy fire, he focused only on framing the shot. Serving with unfamiliar units took an emotional toll; he might film a wounded soldier without even knowing his name. He later sought solace at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
