Film Series

The film series that accompanies this exhibition will be screened in the Mary Pickford Theater, James Madison Building. The series examines the ways in which the exploration of North America has been illustrated in film and television. Films are free and open to the public but require an advance registration. Teacher Institutes

Audience: 25 educators from around the country

Purpose: Provide educators with an opportunity to engage in discovery learning and to develop strategies to teach about America's century of exploration. The Institute features the expedition of the Corps of Discovery's quest to connect North America by means of a waterway passage, as well other important expeditions including those lead by Zebulon Pike, Stephen Long, Charles Wilkes, and John Frémont and concludes with the construction of the transcontinental railroad, which closed the door on the quest for a direct water passage to connect the East with the West.

The Library of Congress exhibition Rivers, Edens, Empires: Lewis & Clark and the Revealing of America, opened in late July 2003, supported by content from the American Memory collections and The Learning Page is the focal point of the educators' institute.
