Heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey (1895-1983), is considered by
many to be one of the great boxers of all time. On September 14,
1923, he fought Argentine Luis Angel Firpo (1894-1960) for the heavyweight
title. During the match, pictured here, Firpo knocked his opponent
out of the ring in the first round, but Dempsey climbed back in
to win by a knockout in the second round. Holdings of The
Ring are incomplete, but a gift of several dozen issues by
the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra has helped the Library's
ongoing effort to complete its holdings.
