The speed and motion of football are evoked in this lithograph
by American artist Benton Spruance. His football subject prints
brought him acclaim early in his career, and Spinner Play
is a prime example of his ability to combine fluid Modernist forms
with a Regionalist's eye toward daily life in America. It also owes
something to the influence of artist George Bellows, whom the artist
admired, and to Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera and José
Clemente Orozco.
