Senator Joseph Bailey, a conservative Democrat from Texas, was in the news in 1911, as an investigation that year led to his resignation from the Senate. Wikipedia says:

"His political career was tarnished by an assault against Senator Albert Beveridge, and subsequent investigations brought to light suspicious income and financial ties to the oil industry. The scandal led to his resignation in 1911."

A Google search finds one source that agrees with Wikipedia, and gives the date of the resignation as September, 1911 -- but another says it took place on January 3, 1913 -- the date when his term would have expired naturally.

Whenever the deed was done, it was the end of Bailey's political career.
