What is a gallery?

For whatever you find interesting, fascinating, or mind-blowing on Flickr, galleries are a way to curate up to 18 public photos or videos of your fellow members into one place. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the creativity of your fellow members in a truly unique way around a theme, an idea or just because.

In addition to selecting a title, you can write an introduction (or not) and even include descriptions for the individual photos or videos to bring it all together.

Seriously, how is a gallery different than favorites, sets and collections?

That's a good question. While "sets" and "collections" are all about you and your stuff, think of a gallery like favorites on steroids (in good way -- not in the "baseball has been ruined" way).

Favorites are an ongoing stream of images within the Flickrverse that you like. Galleries give our members an opportunity to curate their view of Flickr, to bring together up to 18 photos or videos. The features of a gallery will give you more opportunity to share your view about what makes your selection interesting.

How do I make a gallery?

To create a Gallery just go to a photo or video that you want to add and click the "Add to a gallery" link within the Actions menu. From here you can create a new gallery or add the image to an existing one.

The "Add to a gallery" link will be available on "safe" photos and videos. If you're viewing content and don't see the icon, it's because the member has decided not to allow their content be available for galleries. Don't fret, there's more where that came from.

I'm trying to add a photo or video, but I don't see the "Add to gallery" link. Why?

Given that there are a myriad of permissioning options related to photos and videos on Flickr, there are times when you will not be able to add a photo or video to your gallery:

Only 18?

We’ve specifically limited the number of photos or video that can be added to each gallery to 18. While it might seem like an arbitrary number, we want to give our members an opportunity to engage in activity that is similar to what a curator of a gallery or museum might undertake. And 18? It seems like a fine place to start.

Even a sprawling retrospective of a genre or specific artist wouldn’t included every single piece of work available. A curator takes the time to choose a selection of artwork that together becomes something in itself.

It’s a challenge and we’re very much looking forward to see the fruits of your labour. Here’s a selection of Galleries that we’ve noticed.

Can I add my own photos and videos to a gallery?

In a word, no.

We've created galleries for members to celebrate the creativity of their fellow members. You can feature your own content in "sets".

How do I find out if my photo or video has been added to a gallery?

The first time someone adds one of your photos or videos to a gallery we'll send you an email letting you know and introducing you to galleries.

You can always see how other Flickr members are including your content in their galleries, just check the Galleries With Your Photos link from your Galleries page. Also, just like all activity around your photos, when one of your photos is added to a gallery it will show in your Recent Activity.

How do I remove my photo from a gallery?

If you don't like the way another member is using one of your photos or videos in their gallery, it's easy to remove it. Just click the [x] next to your image in their gallery. You can also click the "remove it" link when we tell you about someone using your photo in Recent Activity.

You can control whether or not your public photos and videos can be added to a gallery via this account preference.
