it does look like a female, however the boy is so young he does not look "manly" yet

May be a woman, more than a few posed as men throughout the war, and even carried on as men til their deaths

I didn't mean any disrespect to the person in the shot.
Just got a bit carried away with the thought that it might be a woman dressing as a man in order to take part.
It's a great picture.

I immediately thought this person may have been a woman also. I too would love to know this person's story either way.

I immediately thought it was a female too. But in all likelihood, just a very young male soldier. These photos are just amazing!

Regardless of whether this is a portrait of a young man or women, there is a good amount of interesting information on women soldiers in the civil war: americancivilwar.com/women/

I also think this looks like a young woman. Look at the hips, seemingly wider than the waist.

ummm... maybe I'm seeing too much into this picture, but to me it this looks like a PREGNANT young woman, it looks like theres a good sized baby bump there- she's pretty far from being able to button that bottom button

Would a female have posed for a photograph? Most photographs were for family and would they have wanted them to know they had enlisted in disguise?

would guess that added bulk around the middle might help disguise what's on top...
