something tells me this wasn't the safest ride at the fair.

Exactly the same ride, but red and blue, remained well into the 1970'ies at the Swedish amusement park Liseberg in Gothenburg. It was called "Swingoplan".

I was born in 1965 and I rode it around 1973 I think. I remember the "safety belt", just an inch-wide leather belt around my waist. The inside was clad with well worn vinyl and leather padding. It was a great ride.

In the U.S.A. the ride was actually called The Bullet. That was before it became ... incorrect .... to call it as such.

When I was a kid in the '60's this was a mainstay on the midway of the (rather large) Mahoning County Fair (Ohio). This ride can still be found at many county fairs.

More on Zip and Pip the microcephalics who appear in the film Freaks (and are referred to as "pinheads") were Zip and Pip (Elvira and Jenny Lee Snow)

Actually, the real name for the ride is the "Roll-O-Plane", and it was built by Eyerly Aircraft Company out of Oregon. "Bullet" is a theme-name given the ride by some carnival companies, but is not the official factory name. Other rides manufactured by this company were the Loop-O-Plane, Rock-O-Plane, and Fly-O-Plane, amongst others (notice a trend in the names?). They also built the Octopus, Spider, Monster (still seen at many amusement parks), Sidewinder (updated version of the Roll-O-Plane), Arcoplane, Bulgy-The-Whale, Midge-O-Racer, and Ladybugs rides. All of their rides, minus the Fly-O-Plane (of which one is still in operation and that's all) and Arcoplane (none left), can still be seen on carnival midways and in amusement parks all over the world.
