      I don't think she's his wife. I think she is his mother. It doesn't say wife on the photo anywhere and he is very much younger than her. Also they are posed distant from one another, not like a husband/wife pose.
      Also, if you look closely you can see they have similar facial features.

      Budderflyman's suspicions were correct. Her husband had died. Had been murdered in fact! By this guy (her son-in-law):

      The son was a suspect in the murder and later the son-in-law was arrested. Not clear what happened, was there a trial? seems to be no follow up stories from New York Times articles. This photo reads "Mrs. Jacobson" down the left edge, which is consistent with the theory that she is his mom, the widow.

      Edgar Jacobson, his mother Annie Jacobson, and Rev. Charles Emelius all were found not guilty of the New Sweden, ME murder of C. August Jacobson according to the newspaper article in the Auburn Citizen, Auburn, NY on Dec. 14, 1912.
