What is CIP Data?
"CIP data" in its broadest sense refers to the bibliographic record created by the Library of Congress for a book prior to its publication.
RDA changes to CIP data
The Library of Congress has begun the gradual implementation of a new cataloging code, Resource Description and Access (RDA). RDA will allow greater flexibility in transcribing data and providing access to persons named in published works. Please note that the greater flexibility in RDA may impact the appearance of your CIP data.
Core Required Materials
Library of Congress staff create the CIP data based on the book, not the application. The application must be accompanied by the full text or the core required
materials.

Formatting Galley files
- Is your text file prepared?
- Is your forthcoming title complete in more than one physical volume?
- Is your forthcoming title a reprint edition?
Publisher-Provided Summaries
The Library of Congress has developed guidelines for publishers who want the summaries they prepare to appear in the MARC bibliographic record and the CIP Data as submitted. The CIP Program will accept publisher-supplied summaries if the summaries comply with the CIP Guidelines for Summaries.
