As a doctor aboard a transport ship during World War II, Glenn Wyler saw little in the way of combat action, but his ship carried everyone from American troops to German POWs and French African soldiers. He hoped his wartime duties would ease the pain of losing his fiancée, a nurse who died of polio before the war. On one of his last voyages across the Pacific, Wyler came down with pneumonia and almost died, at first stubbornly resisting medical advice he would have given any other patient.
