A nurse in training with two brothers already in uniform, Bernadette Reider answered the call to serve in the waning days of World War II. She made a career out of the Army, retiring in 1973 with 28 years of active duty behind her. She helped to set up the first U.S. Army hospital in Korea in the early days of the war, when the North Korean Army made huge advances and was threatening the city of Pusan.
