This Hiroshige woodcut image is part of the Library of Congress' exhibit Sakura: Cherry Blossoms as Living Symbols of Friendship. The original sakura were a gift from the city of Tokyo to the city of Washington D.C. The gift symbolized the enduring friendship of the people of Japan and the United states. The first two trees were ceremonially planted in March 1912.
