In this image you see "John Flanagan's Clock" which is placed over the entrance to the Main Reading Room of the Library. Herbert Small, who wrote a guide to the building in1897, stated that the clock was "one of the most sumptuous and magnificent pieces of decoration in the library." Against a gold mosaic of zodiac signs, a life-size bronze of Father Time clutching his scythe appears to float above the clock in the Reading Room. Figures of women and children representing the seasons hover at the right and left, and two young men engaged in Reading and contemplation lean against the clock. Below the clock face is Flanagan's bronze bas-relief Swift Runners. Carol Highsmith, the distinguished photographer, has comprehensively photographed the interior of the Thomas Jefferson building and along with much of her other work, has donated them to the Library of Congress.
