The nation's most terrible conflict, the American Civil War grew out of decades of increasing tension between the North and South, abolitionist and pro-slavery factions, secessionists and those who believed in the inviolability of the Union. Sparked by the election of Abraham Lincoln as sixteenth president fo the United States, on a Republican platform that opposed the spread of slavery into US territories, the war burst into flame at Fort Sumter in the Charleston, South Carolina, harbor on April 12, 1861. It lasted for four rending and destructive years that determined the future course and character of the United States. More than three million Americans joined the military in the conflict; and the exploits of its heroes and heroines--military and civilian, Union and Confederate, black and white--have become a lasting source of strength, knowledge, and pride to the Americans who have followed them.
