Ben the Letter Carrier The post office is not just the place where you can mail your letters and packages. It serves many other roles as well. At your local post office you can register for military service (known as the Selective Service), apply for a passport, and pick up tax forms. You can also begin your stamp collection with stamps that are used to celebrate special events or people.

Your local post office is part of a larger network of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The USPS is the Federal agency responsible for safely and efficiently delivering mail to businesses and people throughout the county. Postal employees not only deliver the mail to your doorstep, they also make important contributions to your community. One of the programs the USPS participates in is to help reunite families with missing children by mailing the “Have You Seen Me” cards.

Recently, the USPS held a competition, asking children to send in artwork in hopes of having their designs appear on new postage stamps. These new postage stamps were issued in 2000.
