Talking Book Topics is published bimonthly in cassette, large-print, and online formats and distributed at no cost to blind and physically handicapped individuals who participate in the Library of Congress reading program. It lists digital audiobooks and magazines available through a network of cooperating libraries and covers news of developments and activities in network library services.

The annotated list in this issue is limited to titles recently added to the national collection, which contains thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles, including bestsellers, classics, biographies, romance novels, mysteries, and how-to guides. Some books in Spanish are also available. Publications about cancer offered in accessible formats

Most American Cancer Society (ACS) publications are now available in audio CD, audio MP3, and accessible PDF formats, thanks to a partnership between ACS and the American Council of the Blind (ACB). A smaller number of those publications are available in braille and large print, and the ACS has redesigned its entire website for screen-reader use. All special-format publications may be ordered at www.cancer.org/AboutUs/ACSPolicies/accessibility-at-the-american-cancer-society-policy external link symbol or by calling 1-800-227-2345. This number also serves as a 24-hour hotline for individuals who are blind or visually impaired and wish to speak with a cancer-information specialist.

Medicare and You handbook available in braille

Medicare recipients with vision impairments may now request a braille version of the 2011 edition of Medicare and You, the program’s official handbook, by calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. Medicare and You describes recent service changes, details costs and coverage, explains prescription drug plans, and defines the rights of Medicare patients. The publication is also available in large-print and cassette formats.

Pennsylvania Council of the Blind publishes no-measure cookbook

The Pennsylvania Council of the Blind has published a new cookbook for individuals whose physical or visual impairments make precise measurements difficult. The True No-Measure Cookbook includes more than 225 recipes that call for ingredients in amounts of "one can" or "a handful," rather than requiring the use of measuring spoons or cups. The book is available in braille, large-print, Microsoft Word, and DAISY formats and may be ordered by contacting Sue Lichtenfels at (412) 429-1727 or cookbook@pcb1.org. A braille hard copy costs $25; all other formats cost $12.50.

Audio bibles for flash-drive cartridges

Audio versions of the New King James Bible in English that play on NLS standard and advanced digital talking-book machines are available from the nonprofit organization Aurora Ministries, also known as Audio Bibles for the Blind. Bibles produced for use on the advanced player are bookmarked by testament, book, and chapter. If you would like a copy of the New King James Bible to be loaded on to your flash drive cartridge, send the cartridge through the U.S. mail—via Free Matter for the Blind or Handicapped—to Allen Decker at Aurora Ministries, PO Box 621, Bradenton, FL 34206. Aurora Ministries cannot supply readers with cartridges at this time. The organization also has audio Bibles on cassette, available in more than seventy languages.
