Walter Scott
Chairman, Board of Trustees
Open World Leadership Center

Walter Scott, Jr. is Chairman of Level 3 Communications, Inc. Level 3 Communications is one of the firms created by the 1998 separation of the two operating divisions of Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc., for which Mr. Scott served as Chairman and CEO for 19 years. Level 3 is engaged in the telecommunications and computer services businesses.

Mr. Scott received his civil engineering degree from Colorado State University in 1953. While pursuing his degree, he worked for Kiewit's construction operations during summer breaks. Following graduation, he began work as an engineer in Kiewit's Omaha-area operations. In 1954, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as an air installation officer, inspecting road and runway

construction for the military. After completing his Air Force service, Mr. Scott rejoined Kiewit as an Engineer on the Monticello Dam project in California. The following year, he was Project Engineer on a channel excavation project on the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Mr. Scott transferred to Kiewit's Cleveland District in 1958 where he prepared estimates for highway projects. He was promoted to District Engineer in 1959 and in that position had overall responsibility for the district's estimating and bidding activities. He was named Assistant District Manager in 1961 and District Manager in 1962.

In 1964, Mr. Scott was elected a Vice President of the company and was transferred to headquarters in Omaha to assume responsibility for construction operations east of the Mississippi River. He was elected Executive Vice President in 1965 and given the additional responsibility of overseeing construction operations in the eastern provinces of Canada. Mr. Scott was first elected to the Kiewit board in 1964. He was elected President in 1979. When Peter Kiewit died later that same year, Mr. Scott was selected to succeed him as Chairman.

In 1998, Mr. Scott guided Kiewit's separation into two independent corporations. Kiewit Diversified Group, which was comprised of varied business interests, refocused its efforts on developing a nationwide Internet-based telecommunications network. It was renamed Level 3 Communications, Inc. Kiewit Construction Group, the historical construction, mining, and materials business, is one of the world's leading contracting firms and has retained the Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc. name.

Mr. Scott serves as a director of Berkshire Hathaway, Burlington Resources, Commonwealth Telephone Enterprises, Level 3 Communications, MidAmerican Energy Holdings, RCN Corp., Valmont Industries, and Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc.

Mr. Scott is active in community affairs and is currently serving as Chairman of the Board of Policy Advisors for the Peter Kiewit Institute for Information Science, Technology and Engineering, Heritage Services, and the Omaha Zoological Society. He is a director of Joslyn Art Museum and Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation. On the national level, he is a director of the Horatio Alger Association.
