Volunteer Spotlight - Violet Hutka (January 2010)

Violet HutkaView additional Volunteer Spotlights

It all started in the Fall of 2002 with a newspaper story, a phone call, and an offer to volunteer.  Now nearly eight years later Violet Hutka has transcribed more than 150 veterans’ stories for the Riverside (California) Veterans History Project and the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center of San Diego, California.  Violet retired as an executive legal secretary several years ago and moved to Riverside to be close to family.  She is an accomplished typist and transcriber, and she is often able to type at the pace of the interview.  Transcribing gives her “something important to look forward to,” as she likes to put it.  She always says, “Keep ‘em coming,” as she asks for more interviews to transcribe.  In these past several years it is estimated that Violet has volunteered several thousand hours and produced more than 6,000 pages of veterans’ oral histories, all of which are archived in the Riverside Public Library, the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center of San Diego, and in the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress.
