VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Hispanic Division offers throughout the year a limited number of volunteer internships. Individuals selected to the program may work with the collections relating to Iberian, Latin American, Caribbean, and Hispanic/Latino studies. Although these internships carry no stipend, many persons have found them useful in planning a career, or in obtaining the experience necessary to pursue an academic profession. Interns who are students, with previous approval from their institutions, may arrange the internship to obtain academic credit.

Internship Class of 2012

The Hispanic Division Internship Program provides:

• Educational experience or career planning in Luso-Hispanic, Caribbean, or Hispanic/Latino studies.
• Opportunities to build networks with current and future generations of area studies and library professionals.
• Acquiring knowledge of the Library of Congress general and special collections.
• May result in the production of reports about the collections.

Interns typically work on producing finding aids and updating the Hispanic Division’s web offerings, but may also be involved in the Hispanic Reading Room, special projects and events.

The period of internship may range from two months to more than a year, working about two full days per week or more (200 hours minimum). Part-time arrangements are also possible. Interested persons should have:

• Reading knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, or French.
• An interest in one or more of the countries covered by the Hispanic Division.
• An interest in libraries.
• The ability to commit to the 200 hour minimum
