James "Super Chikan" Johnson and Richard Christman perform blues guitar from Mississippi, another in the Homegrown Concert Series sponsored by the American Folklife Center.
Speaker Biography: Sprinkled with stories about life in the Mississippi Delta, the music of James "Super Chikan" Johnson has been heard from Rovigo, Italy to Russia, from Dakar, Senegal to Dayton, Ohio. An energetic and exciting performer in the Delta blues tradition, he offers a variety of original and traditional music, spanning the blues spectrum from country to contemporary. Performing solo or with his band, "The Fighting Cocks," Johnson gives memorable performances to audiences from juke joints to elementary schools. His debut album, "Blues Come Home to Roost," received wide critical acclaim, including three Handy Awards. He has released three CDs and was a 2004 recipient of the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.
