GW Law Joins Global Network Initiative

GW Law Joins Global Network Initiative

Thanks to the work of Professors Dawn Nunziato and Arturo Carrillo and their Global Internet Freedom and Human Rights Distinguished Speaker Series, GW Law and its faculty have been invited to become academic partners with the Global Network Initiative. GNI is a non–governmental organization that advocates for privacy on the Internet and the prevention of Internet censorship by authoritarian governments. Professors Nunziato and Carrillo said of this partnership, "We are very honored to join GNI and to contribute to its work toward Internet freedom. Our partnership with GNI dovetails with our work, through which we address global Internet free speech and human rights issues."

Senator Daniel Inouye, J.D. '52: 1924–2012

Daniel K. Inouye, the country's second longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate who represented the people and state of Hawaii for more than 50 years, passed away on December 17. He spent the majority of his life performing acts of public service, beginning as a Red Cross volunteer in the immediate aftermath of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and ending as the person who was third in line of succession for the Presidency.

This fall, Associate Dean for Government Procurement Law Daniel I. Gordon was honored with the Coalition for Government Procurement's "Lifetime Acquisition Excellence Award," presented to an individual in the procurement community for delivering best-value solutions for the taxpayer and has demonstrated a long-term commitment to improving the federal acquisition system.

GW Law Alumna Addresses Asylum Law

In the Federal Bar Association's Immigration Law Section newsletter, Michelle Kobler, J.D. '11, claims the one-year deadline to file for asylum protection does not adequately address the realities for many immigrants. Through the example of a persecuted Bolivian teenager, Kobler points out that the deadline is often the only reason that many asylum-seeking immigrants are denied fair hearings.

On C-SPAN now: At a National Constitution Center symposium in Philadelphia last month, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Christopher Bracey and Professor David Fontana discussed the similarities and differences between American alcohol prohibition in the early twentieth century and today's "War On Drugs." Also participating in the conversation was Daniel Okrent, author of "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition."
