  1. We will be hosting public events in Traverse City and Kalkaska on Saturday, January 12. We will be at the American Legion Post 35, located at 1231 Hastings Street in Traverse City starting at 9:00 AM and then will be at the Kalkaska County Senior Center at 303 South Coral Street in Kalkaska at 10:30 AM. I work for you and I want to hear your opinions about the important issues facing our country. Please stop by if you are in the area.
  2. I will be meeting this morning with the Marquette County Road Commission to further discuss the County Road 595 project that has been blocked by the EPA. The EPA’s costly regulations have proved too high a hurdle for this project and it will cost Northern Michiganders many good paying jobs. We can’t let Washington regulators prevent families in the First District from getting the shot at a good job.
  3. Tomorrow, we will be holding a public “Meet and Greet” at the Escanaba City Hall, located at 410 Ludington Street from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM EST. Please stop by if you are in the area. To see a full list of our public events this week, see the link below:
  4. We will be hosting a public “Meet and Greet” in Iron River on Monday, January 7, at the Iron River City Hall at 160 West Genesee Street from 5:00pm to 6:00pm CST. Please stop by to share with me your thoughts on the important issues facing our country.
  5. I again voted today to put the brakes on Washington’s runaway spending by opposing a $9 billion bill that was not offset. While I certainly feel for all those impacted by Hurricane Sandy, we need to get serious about reducing spending now.
  6. It is an honor to continue serving as Northern Michigan’s voice in Congress. Today, I was sworn into the 113th Congress. Our country is facing big challenges and I am hopeful that both sides can work together to enact some positive solutions for the American people.

  7. I was pleased to vote yesterday for the “Congressional Pay Freeze and Fiscal Responsibility Act.” President Obama’s plan to increase the paychecks of Members of Congress and federal bureaucrats is just ridiculous. Families in Northern Mic...higan are really hurting right now and are rightfully fed up with the inaction in Washington. The last thing people in Northern Michigan want to see is the President giving lawmakers a raise.See More
  8. Today, taxes are slated to increase on every hard-working American. To prevent this, I was proud to support the compromise bill from the Senate this evening that permanently reduces tax rates for the majority of Northern Michigan families. While this bill’s permanent tax relief is a positive step toward protecting America’s economy, it does not change the fact that we have a federal government we can’t afford. The federal government is still spending trillions more than it takes in. I remain committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to reduce wasteful federal spending and solve America’s debt crisis.
  9. Representatives from my office will be holding mobile office hours throughout Northern Michigan in January. If you are experiencing difficulties with federal agencies we can get you the answers you deserve. See the link below to see the complete schedule.
  10. We are hoping everyone in Northern Michigan has a very Merry Christmas and are blessed with a joyous time of family, gifts and love. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.
  11. Recently, I joined many of my colleagues in writing to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano urging them to use diplomatic mans to safely bring home Marine combat veteran John Hammer who being unjustly imprisoned in Mexico. You can read the letter at the link below.
  12. I was honored to be named Subcommittee Chairman of Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health today. As a doctor who worked in a VA hospital for 20 years, I am committed to ensuring our veterans receive the benefits they deserve.
  13. Check out my speech on the House Floor last night regarding my bill to name the Post Office building in Munising after the late Mrs. Elizabeth Kinnunen of Munising. Mrs. Kinnunen’s family should be deservedly proud of her life and accomplishments. Like so many people in Northern Michigan, her life’s story was one of fidelity to her family and to her country.
  14. Representatives from my office are holding ‘mobile office hours’ throughout Northern Michigan this month. These office hours offer a chance for constituents to get help with any problems they are having dealing with federal agencies. To see our complete December schedule, see the link below.
  15. We are deeply saddened by the very tragic events in Connecticut today…please keep all those whose lives have been shattered in your prayers.
  16. Pleased to be making phone calls to constituents in Northern Michigan this afternoon. While in Washington, it’s always refreshing to hear many common sense ideas from citizens in Northern Michigan.
